North Carolina midfielder Yael Averbuch set an NCAA record for the fastest goal scored in NCAA women’s history Sunday afternoon when she scored in the Tar Heels’ 4-0 victory over Yale after only four seconds.

Averbuch stunned the New Haven crowd of 2,189 when she took the opening kickoff and shot the ball off the ground from the midfield stripe and sent it into the top center of the goal from 55 yards away over Yale goalkeeper Susan Starr.

The previous fastest women’s goal was six seconds accomplished twice by NCAADivision I players (Solfrid Anderson of VCU in 2004 and Kristi Cummings of UNCAsheville in 1995) and once by a Division III player (Sara Gross of St. Norbert in 2004).

Averbuch had two goals and an assist in the win, Robyn Gayle added a goal, and Heather O’Reilly had her first goal of the season off the first career assist by Caroline Boneparth.
