No. 24 Virginia used a Sarah Lane goal in the closing seconds of the first half and a superb defensive effort in the second half to upset No. 8 West Virginia, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in an NCAA Division I third-round clash at Morgantown, W.Va.

Goalkeeper Anne Abernethy's solid play was critical for the Cavaliers (13-6-2), who advance to a third-round showdown at No. 13 Penn State next weekend.

West Virginia (18-3-1), seeded fifth for the NCAA Tournament, was the only of eight seeds not to reach the Sweet 16.

A constant rainfall and sludgy field conditions in near-freezing temperatures made for a choppy match, but Lane fired into an open net from 25 yards with five seconds remaining in the first half to give Virginia the only goal it needed. It came off a through ball that deflected off Mountaineer goalkeeper Laura Finley, who then slipped and fell, leaving the goal open.

''You couldn't play soccer today — it was just a battle,'' Virginia coach Steve Swanson said. ''It was going to be a game where one break could win the game.''

''It was just a matter of which team was going to make a mistake,'' said West Virginia coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. ''Unfortunately, the mistake happened on the side of West Virginia, and I credit Virginia because they capitalized on it.''

The Cavaliers' victory was the only upset of the second round, although No. 9 Texas A&M needed penalty kicks to get past SMU. Four games involving Top 10 teams went to overtime — including both Pacific 10 Conference showdowns — with No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 6 Connecticut prevailing.

A look at Sunday's action:

Stanford 1 California 0: Ally Marquand's 95th-minute goal lifted the No. 1 Cardinal (20-1-0) past its archrival for the second time this season. Stanford's defense, led by outside backs Alisan Pabon and Lindsay Hunt, earned its 16th shutout, and fourth in a row. Pabon started the sequence that led to the overtime goal, stealing the ball and feeding Marcia Wallis up the right wing. Wallis' cross was flicked on by Marcie Ward to Marquand, who fired to the upper-right. The Cardinal will be home Saturday night for its third-round clash with Notre Dame.

Notre Dame 3 Purdue 1: Amanda Guertin's second two-goal game of the tournament led the Fighting Irish (13-7-0) past the visiting Boilermakers, avenging a 3-1 defeat Oct. 8. Guertin had an assist on the other Notre Dame goal, finding Melissa Tancredi's head with an 85th-minute free kick. Courtney Coppedge tallied for Purdue. The Irish will play at No. 1 Stanford next Saturday night.

Richmond 1 James Madison 0: Annette Isham's 79th minute goal carried the surprising Spiders (15-5-2) to victory in the rain at Charlotte, N.C., and into a third-round showdown next weekend at Portland. Richmond took charge in the second half, with Isham scoring from a Jenna Merriam pass.

Penn State 2 Maryland 1: Heidi Drummond's 88th-minute header lifted the No. 13 Nittany Lions (17-3-1) in a downpour at College Park, Md., their second win over the No. 19 Terrapins this season. Joanna Lohman gave Penn State a 32nd-minute lead, but Simone Dekker pulled Maryland even six minutes later. The Nittany Lions will be home for the third round against Virginia.

Florida State 2 Auburn 1: Cindy Schofield's 87th-minute strike, her 15th goal of the year, lifted the Seminoles (13-6-3) at Tallahassee, Fla. Schofield had an assist on Florida State's other goal, a free kick finished by Camie Bybee in the 19th minute. Christina Culver tied the score in the 64th for Auburn. which benefited from a strong game by goalkeeper Megan Rivera. The Seminoles will play at Connecticut next Sunday.

Connecticut 1 Rhode Island 0: Kristen Graczyk's second goal of the afternoon lifted the No. 6 Huskies (20-2-1) to an overtime triumph in Storrs, Conn., and a third-round home date next Sunday against Florida State. Graczyk finished a feed from Sarah Popper 2:11 into the extra period. Connecticut dominated the match, opening a 30-3 shot advantage, but goalkeeper Jamie Epperlein made 13 saves to keep the Rams in the contest. Graczyk fired the Huskies ahead in the 69th minute, but Melanie Kasparek pulled Rhode Island even 10 minutes later.

Pepperdine 2 Wisconsin 0: Jenna Fodor's overtime rebound lifted the No. 5 Waves (18-1-2), who rallied from a late deficit to triumph at Milwaukee. Jessica Wolff fired the Badgers ahead in the 13th minute, but Lacey Ubaldi scored from a Megan Woods feed in the 83rd minute to send the match to overtime. Fodor's winner followed Wisconsin goalkeeper Kelly Conway's save of a Tasha Spangler shot. Pepperdine will play at Michigan next Saturday.

Michigan 4 Miami, Ohio 0: Therese Heaton scored two first-half goals and Abby Crumpton became the Wolverines' all-time points leader in a rout at Ann Arbor, Mich. Vicky Whitley and Kate Morgan added second-half goals for Michigan (15-5-2), which reached the third round — where it will play host to Pepperdine next Saturday — for the first time in five NCAA appearances. Crumpton had two assists for a career 115 points, overtaking Kacy Beitel on the career scoring list.

Nebraska 1 Yale 0: Christine Latham's 15th goal of the season led the No. 10 Cornhuskers (16-5-3) in the rain at Philadelphia, giving them their seventh successive Sweet 16 appearance. Nebraska's defense notched its 14th shutout of the season, and Latham did the rest, firing to the far post after taking a feed from Kori Saunders in the 57th minute. The Huskers play at defending champion Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.

Santa Clara 5 Arizona State 1: Leslie Osborne, Kristi Candau and Veronica Zepeda scored goals in a 2:28 span as the No. 4 Broncos (17-4-1) romped in the second half past the No. 25 Sun Devils. Arizona State held a 1-0 lead at halftime on a Manta Makoski goal, but Santa Clara dominated the second 45 minutes, taking 22 shots. Candau added a second goal, Bree Horvath scored another, and Aly Wagner had two assists for Santa Clara, which will be home against Nebraska on Saturday.

UCLA 1 USC 0: Kendall Billingsley found the net nearly 14 minutes into overtime, carrying the No. 3 Bruins (18-3-0) past their archrivals at Los Angeles. Goalkeeper Julie Peterson kept the Women of Troy in the match, making 10 saves — including a stop on a Nandi Pryce penalty kick — as UCLA owned a 22-2 shot advantage. The loss was USC's first this season in nine overtime games. Billingsley's 104th-minute strike came from a Pryce cross that was flicked on by Crystal James. The Bruins will be home against Texas A&M in a third-round game Saturday night.

Texas A&M 1 SMU 1 (3-2 PK): Kati Jo Spisak stopped the final three SMU penalty kicks to lead the No. 9 Aggies (18-4-2) at College Station, Texas. Erin McLeod had halted the first two Texas A&M shots of the tiebreaker as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead, but Spisak's saves and conversions by Laura Probst, Holly Davis and Andrea Starns set up a third-round encounter Saturday night at UCLA. Heather Ragsdale gave A&M an 83rd-minute lead, but SMU's Jill Heinemann forced overtime with an 18-yard shot off the bottom of the crossbar with 2:20 to go in regulation.
