Scotsman Steve Nicol, who guided New England to a MLS Cup runner-up finish after taking over as interim head coach May 23 after the team started the 2002 season with 2-4-1 record, has signed a two-year contract with the Revs.
Nicol had replaced Fernando Clavijo, whom he served as assistant. Nicol also served a two-game stint as the Revs' interim coach at the end of the 1999 season. He was 2002 MLS Coach of the Year.
The Revs also named Renato Capobianco director of soccer. He had served as Revs' assistant coach in 2000 and in 1997-1998. Capobianco, 39, served as director of soccer for the San Jose Earthquakes in 1999. He was the Tampa Bay Mutiny's assistant coach in 1996.
