BATTLE OF TEXAS: Emma Smith scored a goal and assisted on Juli Goin's as No. 6 Texas A&M captured the Big 12 Conference regular-season championship with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 Texas, the defending champion. The Aggies, who extended their unbeaten streak to a school-record 14 games, have beaten Texas in all 12 meetings.

ANOTHER TAR HEEL TITLE: Maryland didn't lose to No. 2 North Carolina for the first time, earning a 1-1 tie Friday on Lindsay Givens' goal near the start of the first half, but the result was enough to give the Tar Heels their 12th ACC title in 15 years. Carolina (4-1-2), which held off Wake Forest earlier in the week, was the only ACC team to lose fewer than three conference matches.

No. 12 Clemson, which recorded two non-conference wins, and resurgent Virginia tied for second in the nation's most balanced conference — and, perhaps, its best — with 4-3-0 marks. No. 19 Florida State and Maryland (both 3-3-1) tied for fourth, with Duke (2-3-2) sixth. Wake Forest and North Carolina State (both 2-4-1) are in the cellar after losing four successive conference matches.

NO BIG EAST SURPRISES: No. 8 West Virginia, No. 11 Connecticut, No. 15 Villanova and Rutgers captured Big East Conference quarterfinal victories and advance to the Nov. 8-10 final four in Storrs, Conn.

UConn edged Georgetown, 1-0, on Zahra Jalalian's 49th-minute strike, and in the semifinals will face Villanova, which beat Boston College, 1-0, on Brittany Hunsaker's 50th-minute goal. West Virginia hammered St. John's, 4-0, as Lisa Stoia contributed two goals and an assist; the Mountaineers will meet Rutgers, which jumped to a three-goal lead before pulling out a 4-3 win at Miami as Danae Risoli tallied twice.

NORTHWEST SHOWDOWN: Bree Horvath's 11th-minute goal was enough for No. 7 Santa Clara to beat host Portland, the No. 5-ranked squad, in a West Coast Conference showdown. The Broncos, who have four wins in their past five meetings with Portland, are tied with No. 9 Pepperdine, a 2-1 winner at St. Mary's, for the WCC lead. Santa Clara finishes at home against Gonzaga, and Pepperdine, which would get the conference's automatic NCAA berth with a win, plays host to San Francisco. Both games are Saturday.

PAC-10'S BEST: Marcia Wallis' scored twice as No. 1 Stanford rallied to beat archrival California, 2-1, in Berkeley. The Cardinal, home next weekend against No. 17 Arizona State and Arizona, needs one win to clinch a share of the Pacific-10 title and two to win it outright. Only UCLA and USC — which swept Oregon and Oregon State — can catch Stanford. Both Arizona schools topped No. 20 Washington, but both fell to Washington State, which beat No. 18 Cal, 2-0, last week.

UNBEATENS: Conference USA champ Charlotte (15-0-2), ranked 14th, wrapped up an unbeaten regular season with a 3-2 victory at Saint Louis. Navy (15-0-4), the other Division I team without a loss, topped UMBC and Bucknell, but it had to settle for second in the Patriot League. Army won the regular-season title with a point.

ONE IN, 63 TO GO: Princeton became the first team to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, beating Cornell, 2-0, Saturday to clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title. Dartmouth, too, can share the crown with a win next weekend over Penn, but the Tigers get the Ivy's No. 1 slot by virtue of its victory over Dartmouth.

MVC SEMIS SET: Northern Iowa and Evansville joined Creighton and Illinois State, the top two seeds, in the Missouri Valley Conference semifinals after victories Sunday in the tournament openers.

OTHER TITLES: BYU claimed its fourth successive Mountain West championship by beating No. 24 Utah, 2-1. … No. 21 Tennessee topped Georgia to win the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division. The Lady Vols are the No. 2 seed in the SEC tournament behind No. 25 Auburn, which finished its regular season with a 0-0 tie against Alabama. … SMU beat UTEP, 3-1, to claim the WAC title. … Hartford won the America East crown. … Regular-season titles were determined in the Atlantic Sun (Central Florida/Florida Atlantic), Atlantic-10 (Dayton/Rhode Island), Big Sky (Idaho State), Big South (Liberty), CAA (William & Mary), Horizon (UW Milwaukee), MAAC (Fairfield), Northeast (Central Connecticut St.), Ohio Valley (Southeast Missouri) and Southern (Furman).

TO BE DETERMINED: It'll be UC Santa Barbara vs. Cal Poly for the Big West Conference championship. The Gauchos must win Friday's showdown in San Luis Obispo to earn an NCAA berth; Cal Poly needs only a tie. … The wild Southland Conference race — four of seven teams with six wins, separated by four points — will be decided Monday and Tuesday. Northwestern State is on top with 22 points, but Southeastern Louisiana and Southwest Texas, both with 20 points, have one match remaining. Second-place La.-Monroe (21 points) could fall to fourth.

FINALLY; No. 23 Purdue was upset at Illinois in a Big Ten makeup game on Sunday. The Boilermakers slipped to third in the conference, and the Illini nailed down a berth in the conference tournament. … No. 22 Denver prepared for the Sun Belt tournament by shutting out Minnesota. … No. 10 Penn State's only scheduled game, against No. 8 West Virginia, was canceled by bad weather.
