San Jose's Joe Cannon has been named 2002 Goalkeeper of the Year, Chicago's Carlos Bocanegra has been selected as the 2002 Defender of the Year and Chris Klein was been named the 2002 Comeback Player of the Year.
Colorado's Mark Chung, 32, won the individual 2002 MLS Fair Play Award. He finished the season without receiving a caution or a red card for the fourth time in his seven-year career.
The award winners were selected by votes from MLS coaches, general managers, players and the media.
Cannon, 27, helped the Earthquakes to the second-best record in the league and a second consecutive playoff appearance. He posted 100 saves.
Bocanegra, 23, anchored a Chicago defense line decimated by injuries and the absence of its U.S. national team players for the World Cup. Chicago's defense surrendered 38 goals– third fewest allowed in MLS.
Klein, 27, rebounded from a tear of his right ACL on Oct. 17 to start 25 games for Kansas City and notch up 19 points on seven goals and five assists.
MetroStars defender Steve Jolley was been named the 2002 United States Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year. He was honored in recognition of his contributions to the community through the Just Jolley Foundation, a charitable organization the defender established with his wife, Pilar. During the 2002 calendar year, Jolley succeeded in raising nearly $18,000 for a variety of important causes.
