Adrienne Barnes scored one goal and assisted on the other as North Carolina State stunned No. 1-ranked North Carolina, 2-1, Thursday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash at SAS Stadium in Cary, N.C.

The Tar Heels (10-1-1) owned a 45-10 advantage on shots, but N.C. State goalkeeper Gretchen Lear made 19 saves and the Wolfpack (8-3-0) claimed their first victory over UNC, a history lasting 33 matches. N.C. State's record against their rival is 1-30-2.

Both ties in the series came in 1988, when Wolfpack coach Laura Kerrigan was playing for N.C. State. The second tie, in the ACC tournament final, went to a shootout, captured by the Wolfpack.

The loss was the Tar Heels' first in conference play since Wake Forest pulled off a 1-0 upset in 2000.

''This was a tremendous team effort,'' Kerrigan said. ''Senior leadership was the key for us tonight. They really wanted this; they didn't want to settle. The team showed a lot of grit. They didn't give up when [North Carolina] tied the game.

''We're going to enjoy this one. But we also have to get ready for Duke [on Oct. 15].''

Barnes finished Jenny Pearce's rebound in the second minute for her sixth goal of the season, but Lindsay Tarpley pulled the Tar Heels even from an Elizabeth Ball feed in the 57th minute. Tarpley, a freshman who scored the winning goal in the United States' FIFA U-19 World Championship title-game win over Canada, has 10 goals this fall.

Lindsey Underwood netted the winner in the 65th minute, finishing a pass from Barnes. The goal was Underwood's fourth gamewinner.

Lear's 19 saves tied a school and ACC record. N.C. State assistant coach Lindsay Brecher set the mark in a 2-0 loss to the Tar Heels in 1988, and Maryland's Heather Rowe tied it the following season in a 3-0 loss to UNC.

N.C. State, considered the weakest of eight strong ACC teams entering the season, had tied No. 10 Wake Forest and upset Maryland to begin its conference campaign. At 2-0-1, the Wolfpack are in the driver's seat for the regular-season title.

North Carolina, coming off a victory over then-top-ranked Stanford last weekend, was playing its first ACC match. It had shut out its previous five opponents.
