College women's soccer's elite programs took turns beating up on each other during the second week of the season, leaving a Soccer America Top 25 in which only two of the top 18 teams — No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Stanford — are unbeaten.
Losing didn't hurt much of the Top 25. Clemson jumped from 14th to 12th after dropping both its games, to Santa Clara and Portland. Duke moved from 17th to 15th after falling to Washington. Texas' step from No. 4 to No. 3 was fueled by a close loss at Stanford. UCLA moved into the Top 5 despite an overtime loss to Penn State. California went from No. 12 to seventh after a 1-1 week, with a loss to Texas and win over Texas A&M.
Reigning NCAA champion Santa Clara and fellow West Coast Conference power Portland, both at full strength following the return of its star players from the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship, took big leaps in the rankings after victories over Notre Dame and Clemson at the Fighting Irish's annual classic.
The Broncos, who were No. 3 in the Preseason Top 25, jumped from 10th to fifth, and Portland, ranked second at season's start, moved from 13th to sixth.
Penn State, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Washington dropped slightly after losing matches.
Three Top 10 teams and seven Top 25 teams have lost two games. USC, which moved into the rankings at No. 21 following a shutout victory over Penn State and a 0-0 tie with Virginia, has a losing record.
West Virginia and Florida, ranked in the Preseason Top 25, returned to SA's rankings after dropping out following first-week losses. The Mountaineers topped Boston College and are ranked 22nd. Florida, ranked 24th, bounced back from losses at Michigan and Cincinnati with home wins over Connecticut and Nebraska.
Other newcomers to the Top 25 are SMU (No. 17), Auburn (No. 23) and Wake Forest (No. 25).
Dropping off the list were No. 15 Florida State (tied Missouri, lost to LSU, both at home), No. 21 Arizona State (tied Denver, lost to SMU), No. 22 Penn (lost to Richmond and James Madison), No. 23 Utah (tied at home by Northwestern), No. 24 BYU (lost at home to Kentucky) and No. 25 Boston College.
