Octavio Zambrano, who compiled one of the highest winning percentages in MLS history (.587) while at the helm of Los Angeles (1997-99) and the MetroStars (2000-02), is the new head coach of Moldova First Division club FC Tiligul.
Zambrano, an Ecuador native who immigrated to the USA to play college ball, was a successful youth coach in Southern California before becoming assistant coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS’s inaugural 1996 season. He became Galaxy head coach in 1997 and in 1998 guided the Galaxy to its best regular-season record ever (24-8), during which it scored a league record 85 goals. He also compiled the best record of all MetroStars coaches and is that club’s only coach to notch more than one playoff victory (4). FC Tiligul was in ninth place of the 10-team league when Zambrano took over.
