The acquisition of Freddy Adu from D.C. United has certainly been a marketing coup for Real Salt Lake, but now, with the season opener less than a week away, comes the answer to the real question: How good is Freddy? Good enough to change RSL’s fortunes this season?

His teammates have no doubt. “He’s very good. I think he’s going to be making a difference for us this year,” said Real striker Jeff Cunningham. “He’s an extremely good dribbler and an extremely crafty passer.” RSL captain Jason Kreis added. “Good things will happen if we get him in good spots.”

To his chagrin, perhaps, Adu will most likely be playing as left-sided attacking midfielder this season — the same position he complained about at D.C. United — although RSL coach John Ellinger says he wants him to play a more Ronaldinho-style role. Adu has said before that he would rather play in central midfield, although the rise of Mehdi Ballouchy means Ellinger sees more use for him out on the flank. “I try and use the analogy that, ‘If it’s good enough for Ronaldinho, it’s good enough for you,'” Ellinger says.
