Benny Feilhaber, a 21-year-old Californian product who left UCLA last year to join Hamburg SV, made his German First Division debut, coming on at halftime of a 2-1 loss to Schalke. The score was tied 1-1 when he replaced 21-year-old Dutch international Nigel de Jong.

It took an own goal — Ivar Ingimarsson deflecting a Frank Lampard free kick from — for Chelsea to beat American keeper Marcus Hahnemann and take a 1-0 win off newly promoted Reading.

Everton, with Tim Howard in goal, lost its first game of the season, 2-1 to Middlesbrough. Howard faced two penalty kicks by Nigerian Aiyegbeni Yakubu and saved one.

Johann Smith, a 19-year-old Connecticut product who has been on a scholarship contract at English Premier League club Bolton, has been signed to a 3-year professional contract according to his agent Lyle Yorks of Proactive Sports Management. Smith, who played youth ball for Oakwood SC, has been on the bench for league games this season but has yet to see action.

In England's second tier, Leeds (Eddie Lewis), which last year came close to promotion, fell, 4-0, to Stoke and finds itself in the relegation zone.

In the Netherlands, Michael Bradley got his first start of the season as Heerenveen fell, 1-0, to Heracules.
