Brian McBride, Fulham's leading scorer in English Premier League play with six strikes, scored in the Cottagers' third-round FA Cup clash with second-tier Leicester. McBride opened the scoring in the 69th minute after running onto a through ball. Leicester, however, scored a last-minute goal for a 2-2 tie to set up a replay. Defender Carlos Bocanegra went the full 90 for Fulham.
It was the second FA Cup goal for McBride, who has scored 25 league goals since joining Fulham in January of 2004.
In one of four FA Cup clashes between Premier League teams, Blackburn and Everton met, each with an American in goal and for one of them it was a day to forget.
Blackburn, with Brad Friedel, prevailed 4-1, and afterward Everton coach David Moyes criticized the performance of his goalkeeper Tim Howard.
The 27-year-old keeper failed to handle a long-range shot in the fifth minute to set up a Matt Derbyshire rebound goal and he allowed a Morten Gamst Pedersen free kick to fly past him. Blackburn's third goal came on a Paul Gallagher shot that entered the goal under Howard's body.
''The ball moved a lot and that contributed, but Tim should have saved the first one, and I'm not convinced the free-kick went in the corner of the net,'' Moyes said. ''The first one was spilled and then after the free kick we found ourselves 2-0 down before we really got started.''
Howard's performances had been stellar since joining Everton on loan from Manchester United last summer. Just last week, Howard received praise from Everton defender Phil Neville, who called him one of the Premier League's best keepers:
''He's been the catalyst for us keeping all these clean sheets. … He isn't making mistakes. He is thriving and I just hope that we can sign him.''
DaMarcus Beasley went 80 minutes for Manchester City, which settled for a 1-1 tie with second-tier Sheffield Wednesday, for which 22-year-old American defender Frank Simek went the full 90.
Johann Smith, a 19-year-old Connecticut product, made his third appearance in an official first team game for EPL club Bolton when he came on in the 51st minute of a 4-0 win over third-tier Doncaster. Bolton had already scored its four goals when he entered. The forward came off the bench in a League Cup and an EPL game in October.
Other Americans in FA Cup action were defender Jay DeMerit, whose EPL Watford downed fourth-tier Stockport, 4-1; defender Jonathan Spector, a halftime sub for West Ham (EPL) in its 3-0 win over third-tier Brighton; and Eddie Lewis, who went the distance as Leeds fell, 3-1, to fellow second-tier club West Brom.
