One of the emerging stars of the U.S. women's team at the U-20 World Cup in Chile is Alex Morgan, 19, who has scored three goals so far to help her country into Thursday's semifinal against Germany. "Whenever the USA goal-getter takes possession, Chile's stadiums erupt with anticipation," according to the world governing body's official site.
Morgan, who only started playing seriously at 13, names her role models as Robinho and Michelle Akers, and said she is not entirely comfortable with her new-found celebrity status. "Obviously I'm a little proud, but I'm just part of the team," she said. "I'm thrilled to find so many people supporting the U.S. here. Seeing the U.S. flags in the crowd, and the people waving at us when we're on the bus, it's an amazing experience."
She and strike partner Sydney Leroux have totaled seven goals at the tournament so far, with Leroux scoring twice in the 3-0 quarterfinal win over England. "We want to win the trophy," Morgan said. "Germany and ourselves are strong. The Germans are very similar to the English, although they're physically stronger and better organized. But we believe in our mentality."
