Soccer America associate editor Will Kuhns reports from Barbados, where the USA plays its final game of the semifinal round of TFC qualifying tomorrow 2:00 ET (espn2): Coach Bruce Arena conducted an hour-long sit-down interview with the members of the U.S. media, during which time he announced the lineup he expects to start Wednesday. “It has to be the right mix,” Arena said of his lineup. “Because although there should be some good moments in the game, there will be a lot of ugly moments, so we need guys who are ready to roll up their sleeves and play.” In explaining specific choices, he said that the decision to use Klein was not based solely on the Kansas City midfielder’s performance against Mexico last week. “It’s what he’s done all season,” Arena said. “Bob Gansler has done a good job in bringing him along. If you’re going to play a 3-5-2, you have to be very confident with your wide midfielders. Chris Klein is a guy who, for 90 minutes, is going to be a workhorse. ôHe is going to make mistakes, but he’s probably not going to get outworked, and that’s important in international soccer. He knows how to play the position. He’s a right-side midfielder and he’s just what the doctor ordered for that position.” As for his selections at forward, Arena mentioned that Ante Razov and Joe-Max Moore did not work well together in the last qualifier — a 0-0 tie against Costa Rica in Columbus. “Clint [Mathis] is probably the best finisher we have in camp, next to maybe Landon [Donovan],” Arena said. Tactically, Arena explained that he wants Earnie Stewart and Tab Ramos to stay up and combine with the forwards, rather than sit back in the defensive midfield. “We wanted Jovan [Kirovski] to be close to the forwards against Costa Rica, so you never know what’s going to happen,” Arena said. “But Tab’s got to read the forwards and play with them. He is a very good passer, a very experienced player, and he can go by people.” Neither Bajan newspaper had a story about its home team Tuesday. The Daily Nation had a feature on the U.S. team and a roundup of European soccer, while The Advocate’s only coverage of the qualifier was a picture from the Barbados practice with a caption. Both papers prominently covered Barbados’ chess team, which defeated Rwanda, 4-0, at the 34th World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, thereby clinching a tie for 99th place. USA starting lineup vs. Barbados: Meola, Llamosa, Berhalter, Agoos, Klein, Armas, Stewart, Ramos, Lewis, Mathis, Moore.
