Soccer America Executive Editor Mike Woitalla reports from San Pedro Sula, where the USA meets Honduras in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday. INTERVIEW WITH U.S. COACH BRUCE ARENA: On Kasey Keller vs. Brad Friedel: ôIÆll be very honest with you. This whole situation is just a plus over the long haul. I just see it being a plus. Both are playing extremely well. Friedel has been very good at Blackburn and had a very good game against Mexico. KaseyÆs had a good year, 2001, with Rayo [Vallecano], so itÆs not easy.ö [Arena would not say who will start on Wednesday.] On not revealing the U.S. starting lineup: ARENA: ôIf you put it in the paper on Tuesday, the Hondurans will get it. For example, if we gave you the starting lineup for the Costa Rica game [in Ohio during the semifinal round] — with three quarters of our team injured [or suspended] — Costa Rica might have figured out that they should try to win the game. ôYou realize we played for a tie in Columbus, given the team we had? [The game ended, 0-0]. Because we knew weÆd win in Barbados. We even figured out that Costa Rica might not qualify. ôIf Costa Rica had known three days before the game that our frigginé team wasnÆt there, they would have tried to win the game.ö DonÆt you believe Honduras will be coming out to win regardless of your lineup? ôWho the hell ever knows? You think itÆs scientific, the whole thing?ö On the possibility of starting Steve Cherundolo: ARENA: ôHeÆs a pretty experienced kid. HeÆs been in a lot of international competitions. Not that itÆs the same thing, but he played U-20s and Olympic qualifying and compared to Ante Razov and Josh Wolff — theyÆve never been through that kind of competition. ôAnd playing in Germany, being an American, youÆre under pressure everyday.ö On Honduras compared to Mexico (which the USA beat, 2-0, in its Hexagonal opener, and Costa Rica, the next U.S. opponent following the Honduras clash): ôTheyÆre different teams. Those three donÆt even resemble each other. Plus, the Costa Rica team that played the first game of the final round is different than the one that played in the semifinal round. The coaching change made a big difference. It changed the look of that team and I think the team will be reconstructed during the final round. We donÆt know their true personality. ôThe Hondurans are a little younger and not as experienced as the Costa Ricans. They donÆt have the combination of players down the middle of the field that Costa Rica has.ö On MexicoÆs 4-0 win over Jamaica last Sunday: ARENA: ôI donÆt think Mexico played that well, to be honest. They created [only] three chances in the first half.ö
