MLS Teams of the Month for May

May was a busy month for MLS teams, with all of them playing at least four matches, and it concluded with the 13th MLS season one-third completed. This facilitated the selection of several players, such as Revs forward Kheli Dube, who barely registered on the radar screen in the first month of play. For Ridge Mahoney‘s picks of MLS’s top performers. …

Revived D.C. United settles for tie

Who says draws are dull? For the second straight night, conference rivals served up entertaining four-goal fare. Following Houston’s last-gasp equalizer that earned it a 2-2 tie in Dallas on Wednesday, D.C. United jumped out to a 2-0 lead at Gillette Stadium Thursday but the Revs (6-3-2, 20 points) battled back to gain a point and take over first place in the East, although they have played two more games than Chicago and Columbus, which are a point back in second place.

Shuffling forward(s)

When the USA faces England at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday (TV: ESPN Classic, live, 3 p.m. ET, Galavision, 7 p.m. ET/PT), the players up top must step up. U.S. coach Bob Bradley at the very least must find a suitable attacking companion for Landon Donovan (or a tandem to free Donovan to play elsewhere) for the rugged schedule ahead over the next 18 months, and the Wembley game will give him a chance to evaluate the form of his European-based forwards.

Should Soehn take all the blame at D.C.?

This may or may not be the make-or-break match for D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn when he sends out the worst team in MLS, by virtue of its 2-7-0 record, against Toronto FC Saturday night at RFK. United lost, 1-0, at BMO Field Wednesday night despite an improved performance in several areas. If Fred puts away a perfect cross from Marcelo Gallardo, either on the first attempt or the rebound of a point-blank header he aimed right at keeper Greg Sutton, maybe a 1-1 tie buys the team some confidence and Soehn a bit more wiggle room. Still, a four-game losing streak — during which it has scored one goal — for the four-time league champ is pushing matters close to the edge.

Winning with attitude

What had been billed as a reunion — a meeting of old and new — transformed into a rivalry when the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the defending MLS champion Houston Dynamo Thursday night on national television. The Quakes are still last in the Western Conference, but after upending Houston, 2-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium they are no longer winless at home, and more importantly, they are generating some real, genuine attitude.

Perfect storm of misfortune strikes FC Dallas

Three slices of advice to MLS coaches wishing to keep employment: (1) don’t lose at home; (2) don’t lose at home in front of a buzzing, capacity-plus crowd never before seen in your facility that includes incredulous management execs, and; (3) don’t get blown out 5-1 by a team incapable of shutting out 11 tykes on tricycles. That’s what happened to FC Dallas on Sunday when it fell to the Los Angeles Galaxy, and less than 48 hours later Coach Steve Morrow was fired.

Rapids are best in the West

By beating Real Salt Lake, 2-0, Thursday night with two second-half goals, the Colorado Rapids confirmed their status as best team in the Western Conference. coff if you will at their 4-4-0 record, good for a three-point lead over FC Dallas (2-2-3). The Rapids aren’t scintillating enough to scare people, but they’re good enough to win.
