Red Bulls leave barmy BMO rebuffed yet again

If New York coach Bruce Arena told his team it had to break its recent trend of tying three straight games, 2-2, the message came through garbled. Poised again to clinch a playoff spot by winning, again the Red Bulls faltered. They scored an own goal and had a player ejected as ex-New York right back Marvell Wynne and his mates took them down, 2-1, at BMO Field in front of the usual cacophonous crowd of red-clad crazies and a national TV audience.

MLS hits gut-check time

[TV PREVIEWS] Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney breaks down the action in MLS, which begins Friday when Kansas City hosts D.C. United. It’s gut-check time for the Wizards and the Fire, who can solidify if not confirm postseason reservations by winning at home, and must-win time for skidding homies Columbus and Colorado. The Galaxy takes its improbable but not impossible playoff quest to Houston, and the 2005 expansion teams renew their unique rivalry in Utah. Toronto has a whole lot of Mo’mentum after beating RBNY.

Revs riddle Dallas defense to lift U.S. Open Cup

Losers in all four of its previous finals, New England struck upon a novel approach for the 2007 U.S. Open Cup final Wednesday against host Dallas: attack and exploit. And win. The Revs, which had scored a grand total of two goals in losing the 2001 Open Cup final and 2002, 2005, and 2006 MLS Cups, thumped FCD, 3-2, to capture its first trophy with a blend of youth and experience.

Quakes name John Doyle GM and ponder venues

The two men most responsible for the rebirth of the San Jose Earthquakes weren’t in attendance, but those who were there- including former Clash and Quakes defender John Doyle, who was named Wednesday as the team’s new general manager – heaped praise upon Oakland A’s co-owners John Fisher and Lewis Wolff, the money men behind the MLS expansion team. “I think a lot of it comes back to local ownership,” says A’s president Michael Crowley, who will fill the same role for the Quakes. “The team that was here previously never had that and I think you need that in any sport, baseball or soccer or whatever sport you name. Or whatever business you name, for that matter.”

Bulls hope to clinch playoff spot in Toronto

[TV PREVIEW] As they survey BMO Field and see the crowd and hear its passion, the players, coaches and officials of Red Bull New York must wonder if it will ever come to pass for them, this seemingly ideal melding of location, facility, and fandom. Red Bull Park is still years away. League games in the Meadowlands are ridiculously expensive and drained of atmosphere, except for the nine-goal appearance of David Beckham in early August.

Revs and Dallas vie for elusive triumph

Two teams not accustomed to winning championships meet in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final Wednesday (8 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel) at Pizza Hut Park with one of them assured of winning a rare title. Ten years ago, Dallas won the Open Cup by beating D.C. United on penalties in its only final appearance. New England has reached one Open Cup final (2001) and played in three MLS Cups (2002, 2005, 2006), but has yet to win. The last two years, it lost those MLS Cups at Pizza Hut Park; can the third time be the charm?

Valiant United edged on away goal

When Guadalajara needed one of its attacking stars to step up, Ramon Morales did. When D.C. United needed someone to do something in the offensive third, nobody came through. Morales nailed a golazo in the 64th minute at Jalisco Stadium Tuesday night, stepping into a loose ball rolling along the penalty arc and drilling it high past keeper Troy Perkins. Thus Guadalajara won the Copa Sudamericana second leg, 1-0, and the series on away goals (1-0) with the teams deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate.

Sharp D.C. United takes on Guadalajara

All that stands between D.C. United and a spot in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals is at least 90 minutes of madness in Estadio Jalisco, one of the cathedrals of Mexican soccer, when it faces Guadalajara in the second leg on Tuesday (9 pm ET, live, Fox Sports en Espanol; 11 pm, delay, Fox Soccer Channel). United leads the two-leg series, 2-1, and will advance with a tie, but that’s not the mindset likely to be adopted, at least not early in the match.

Brazil’s New Look

The selection of former captain Carlos Dunga as coach of Brazil came as a surprise to many, but a stunning upset of Argentina in the Copa America final has secured his position as he readies the team for the start of World Cup qualifying.   During his career as a player, many observers regarded Carlos […]

U.S. Backline: Up For Grabs

After winning the Gold Cup, the U.S. conceded 13 goals while losing five straight games in the Copa America and against Sweden and Brazil in friendlies. Yet the defeats did serve the purposes of Coach Bob Bradley, who is testing veterans as well as young players to upgrade the backline.   Defending is about far […]

Beez Faces New Frontier

DaMarcus Beasley has left England for Scotland, where his blazing speed and two-way play may be the right fit for legendary club Glasgow Rangers.   There's a goatee where was once the clean jawline of his teens, and a thick silver chain and "7" encircles his neck rather than the gold version(s) he sometimes favors, […]

Galaxy crushes Crew; D.C. dazzles again

[MLS WEEKEND WRAPUP] Only one of the teams fighting for the eighth and final playoff slot was able to win, and the Galaxy’s 2-1 defeat of Columbus seriously mars the Crew’s chances. D.C. United and New England both won to clinch the top two spots, in either order, atop the Eastern Conference, and Houston’s 3-0 pasting of Dallas at Pizza Hut Park lifted it into a tie with Chivas USA atop the West. Soccer America’s Ridge Mahoney provides his take on the weekend’s MLS action …

USA dumps Hope and claims third

A meeting between U.S. players and head coach Greg Ryan resulted in goalkeeper Hope Solo being dropped from the team for the third-place match against Norway, in which the Americans romped, 4-1, to preserve their record of never finishing lower than third in a World Cup or Olympic Games. Abby Wambach scored twice and Lori Chaulpny and Heather O’Reilly tallied a minute apart in the second half as a rampant USA held its arch-nemesis Norway to just seven shots and peppered veteran keeper Bente Nordby with 23 of its own.

Germany downs Brazil; repeats as Women’s World Cup champ

So, Marta is mortal after all. And four years after winning its first Women’s World Cup, Germany is the first team to repeat as champion. Birgit Prinz and Simone Laudehr scored the goals, and keeper Nadine Angerer stopped Marta’s penalty kick as Germany reclaimed the trophy it won four years ago by beating Brazil, 2-0, in the final. The Brazilians at times mesmerized their foes but weren’t quite as efficient at the crucial moments.

Galaxy upends bumbling Wizards

Kansas City took the principle of squandering chances to the extreme Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium, and plunged both its short- and long-term prospects into doubt. With a record Arrowhead MLS crowd of 32,867 in attendance, the Wizards (10-11-6) could have picked up three valuable points in the standings and also built some momentum at the gate. Instead, the fans saw two Kansas City players sent off, Eddie Johnson and his mates flub numerous chances, and the Galaxy steal out of town with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Gavin Glinton header. Big crowd, big letdown.

Goalkeepers Are Different

[ANALYSIS] Did goalkeeper Hope Solo or Coach Greg Ryan, or both, permanently impair their national-team futures, and is their dispute just another example of an American coach clashing with his keeper(s)? Steve Sampson and Bruce Arena infuriated both Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel by platooning them, and on the eve of the 1994 World Cup round of 16 match against Brazil (some irony, there), coach Bora Milutinovic seriously pondered dropping Tony Meola in favor of Friedel because he believed Meola’s public comments about trying out for an NFL team as a placekicker called into question his focus, not to mention his priorities. English soccer journalist Brian Glanville wrote a book, “Goalkeepers Are Different,” which is a novel, not a declaration of truth. Still, physically, temperamentally, and psychologically, they are unlike field players.

Short-handed D.C. United downs Guadalajara

Losing Marc Burch near the end of the first half probably cost D.C. United a goal, but will his absence in the second leg end up costing his team the series? In front of 21,022 fans at RFK Stadium, United pulled out 2-1 win Wednesday night in the first leg of its Copa Sudamericana showdown with Guadalajara, which peppered the D.C. goal before and after Burch’s ejection in the 44th minute. Guadalajara ended up with a 21-5 edge in shots, but just one goal by Sergio Santana, as compared with one each for midfielders Ben Olsen and Clyde Simms

Wizards need points against Galaxy

The Galaxy‘s playoff hopes are ephemeral at best, but the problems facing the Wizards are all too real. Kansas City rallied to tie Chivas USA last weekend only to succumb in stoppage time to Ante Razov’s second goal of the game to lose, 2-1. A week after a dramatic stoppage-time rally netted two goals and a 3-2 victory over Columbus, the Wizards threw away two points in the waning seconds. They have lost three of their last five and are good but not great at home (7-4-2).

D.C. United tackles Guadalajara in rematch

[COPA SUDAMERICANA] Make no mistake, regardless of what its MLS opponents may think, D.C. United regards itself as the league’s flagship franchise, and considers international competitions like the Copa Sudamericana vital to its reputation. A matchup with Mexican club Guadalajara on Wednesday (8:30 pm ET, Fox Sports en Espanol) also provides a chance for revenge, because Chivas nipped D.C., 3-2, on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup last spring.

The Galaxy shows some life; Razov shines for Chivas USA

[MLS WEEKEND WRAP] Chivas USA stung Kansas City with a stoppage-time goal to move into the Western Conference lead; Chicago’s tie with D.C. United keeps it a point ahead of ninth-place Columbus, which rallied for a win in Toronto; New York needed a rally at home to tie New England; Real Salt Lake dinged Colorado’s playoff hopes with a 1-0 win; and THE GALAXY BEATS DALLAS!!!
