Foxhoven is chasing Portland legends’ records

WOMEN’S NEWS … Portland has had a few pretty good players in its day. Tiffeny Milbrett. Shannon MacMillan. Christine Sinclair. With her torrid scoring pace, Pilot sophomore Danielle Foxhoven is closing in the single-season records of the trio of international stars.

In her last three games, Foxhoven has scored three goals, two goals and four goals to give her 15 on the season. In the No. 2 Pilots’ WCC opener against Gonzaga on Saturday, Foxhoven had three goals by halftime, scored her fourth just before the hour mark and subbed out with 19 minutes remaining. Portland went on to win, 7-0. Last year, the former Colorado Rush star scored a team-high 16 goals.

This week’s Women’s Top 25

* FRESHMAN SENSATION. The nation’s top scorer is Morgan Marlborough, whose three goals in Nebraska’s 5-2 win over Oklahoma gave her 19 goals, setting a Husker freshman record. Marlborough’s winning goal may have been her most impressive goal of the season. She was taken down by a Sooner defender on the right side of the penalty box, recovered to keep possession and dribbled through the Sooner defense before beating goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire with a shot off the far post.

* STREAKING CHIPPEWAS. Central Michigan won its ninth straight game — all by shutouts — when it defeated Mid-American foe Miami (Ohio), 1-0, on Sunday. Senior Amanda Waugh came off the bench to help set up the game’s only goal scored by Chelsi Abbott in the 31st minute. The nine consecutive shutouts tie the MAC record that Ohio set in 2004. CMU leads the conference with a 6-0-0 record.

What They’re Saying

“[If the game ended at] 93 minutes, I’d be a hero, 93 and a half you’re the worst coach, worst players in the world. That’s what it comes down to, and that’s the fine line between winning and losing, and we’re on the wrong side of that line too many times.”

— Toronto coach Chris Cummins after his team’s playoff hopes took a blow with a 1-1 home tie against already-eliminated San Jose, whose Cornell Glen scored some three minutes into stoppage time. (The Globe & Mail)

Maradona’s belly slide [VIDEO]

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] Forward Martin Palermo rewarded Argentina coach Diego Maradona for bringing him back into the national team after a 10-year absence by scoring the stoppage-time gamewinnner in a 2-1 victory over Peru that puts the Argentines back on track. “At the interval I told him to go out and win the game, though we never imagined it would happen like this. It was yet another miracle by Saint Palermo,” said Maradona, who celebrated Palermo’s goal with a face-first slide on the wet grass of Buenos Aires’s Estadio Monumental.

No. 1 Stanford’s O’Hara adds to goal haul

WOMEN’S NEWS … Senior Kelley O’Hara got the first hat trick of her Stanford career to lead the No. 1 Cardinal to a 5-1 victory at No. 25 Oregon in Pac-10 play Sunday afternoon.

O’Hara has 15 goals for the season — tying her for fifth on Stanford’s single-season list — and 46 career goals — No. 5 on Stanford’s all-time list. Continuing her recovery from an early-season illness, sophomore Lindsay Taylor had a goal and two assists to give her two goals and five assists in her last three games.

The five goals marked the sixth time in 13 wins that Stanford scored five or more goals in a game. “I still think we have a ways to go,” Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe cautioned. “But we’re growing together, the team chemistry’s great and we’re getting sharper each game.”

Tar Heels break out of slump with three quick goals

WOMEN’S NEWS … Defending national champion North Carolina, which had not scored from the run of play in more than 200 minutes, broke out with three goals in the first nine-plus minutes and rolled on to a 5-0 win over visiting N.C. State Friday evening.

The No. 3 Tar Heels got goals from Courtney Jones, Meghan Klingenberg and Ali Hawkins, allowing Coach Anson Dorrance to empty his deep bench. How deep? He used 26 players. “These kids work hard for our starters,” he said of the UNC reserves, “and finally got the chance to play a bit.”

Last week UNC had beaten Boston College, 2-1, on a pair of controversial penalty kicks and fell at Virginia Tech, 1-0. UNC and Virginia Tech are now tied for first place in the ACC with 12 points, though the Hokies have a game in hand.

* LEVIN LIFTS CARDINAL. No. 1 Stanford is so deep that it can afford to use Camille Levin, a 2008 Soccer America All-Freshman team selection, off the bench. Levin came on in the second half Friday night and provided a spark for the visiting Cardinal, who scored three goals in the last 35 minutes to defeat Oregon State, 3-0, in their Pac-10 opener.

Levin scored her first goal of the season on a one-on-one opportunity. Christen Press (11th goal) and Lindsay Taylor (20-yard free kick) also scored for Stanford, which improved to 12-0-0, its best start in school history. “Every game in this conference is hard,” said Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe. “We’ve got to play our best and believe we’re going to score and break the ice.”

— Lauren Cheney moved into second place all-time on the UCLA scoring list (141 points) with the second goal in the No. 4 Bruins’ 2-0 victory over Arizona, their 10th win in a row.

— No. 14 USC, the surprise 2007 national champion, defeated Arizona State, 1-0, for its eighth straight win. Goalkeeper Kristin Olsen picked up her 25th shutout to tie the Trojans’ career record.

— No. 19 California won its first game since Coach Neil McGuire returned to the team, winning at No. 25 Oregon, 2-1.

* TOP 25 UPSETS. Friday night’s wildest game took place in Milwaukee, where Marquette came back from 2-0 down after less than 20 minutes to beat No. 13 Connecticut, 3-2, on sophomore Rachael Sloan‘s goal in the 108th minute. The only other Top 25 team to fall to an unranked team was No. 15 LSU, which lost its first SEC game of the season when it fell at Kentucky, 1-0.

* CROWD COUNT. Navy won its annual clash with Army, 2-0, before a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility record crowd of 2,627. “It was an incredible atmosphere out there tonight,” said Navy coach Carin Gabarra. “The entire brigade really showed its support tonight and it means the world to us.”

Arizona schools challenge Yavapai

JUNIOR COLLEGE NEWS … Yavapai, the two-time defending NJCAA Division I men’s champion, has faced some tough competition at home on the Arizona JC circuit. On Wednesday, the Roughriders lost to Scottsdale Community College, 1-0, on a penalty kick by Ryan Hall. It was Yavapai’s third loss of the season — matching the program’s 21-year high for losses — to go along with 11 wins.

The Roughriders will have a chance to get revenge for one of their earlier losses when they play Phoenix College on Saturday night at Ken Lindley Field. It will the 500th game for the Yavapai program and its coach, Mike Pantalione (454-32-13 record), who recalls his five favorite Yavapai games.

* PANTALIONE’S FAVORITES:
Game #39: Yavapai 2, Passaic 1 (1990 NJCAA final). Kurt Funkhouser scores in the second sudden-death overtime period as the Roughriders defeats the heavily favored New Jersey school 2-1 in Trenton.

Game #210: Yavapai 3, Mercer County 0 (1997 NJCAA final).
The Roughriders finish an unbeaten season by scoring two goals in the first six minutes to defeat the home team and capture their third national title in the ’90s.

Game #485: Yavapai 1 San Jacinto 0 (2008 NJCAA final).
Dirk Petersen‘s goal off a free kick early in the first half completes a perfect 26-0-0 season for the Roughriders. The 26 wins establish a national record at any level. It’s Yavapai’s fourth national title this decade and seventh overall.

Game #1: Yavapai 4 St. Louis-Forest Park 3 (September 1, 1989):
Edson Rico scores four goals against a nationally ranked team in the Roughriders’ first game.

Game #136: Yavapai 1 Mercer County 0 (2004 NJCAA semifinals):
After 90 minutes of regulation play, it takes an additional four overtimes and 11 shootout rounds before Kevin Zimmermann, Yavapai’s goalkeeper, is inserted into the shootout by a little-known rule and scores the game-winner for a 6-5 shootout victory in Trenton.
