Carlos Llamosa On the playing conditions: ôThe field was a big factor. On a better field we can beat this team easily. At times we tried to play on the ground, and not in the air because it was too windy. But the ground was in bad shape, so it was hard.ö On Barbados’ early attacking style: ôThey surprised me when they hit the crossbar in the first five minutes of the second half, for sure. If they had scored that goal it would have been a different game for us.ö On the importance of getting the first goal: ôI knew when we scored the first goal that everything would come easier for us. We knew that if we tied this game we could have been out, so it was important to get that first goal. When we did we loosened up a little bit, and the game got easier.ö On the recent defensive play of the USA: ôThe last three or four games weÆve played, weÆve been pretty solid in the back, working hard together. Not giving up goals in five consecutive games is great, it means weÆre doing our job.ö Chris Armas On Barbados’ play: ôI donÆt think Barbados surprised us at all with their play, because we saw their home games on tape, and we knew they were going to fight and battle at home. Until you get that first goal itÆs going to be very difficult. TheyÆre at home, playing for their fans, playing for pride, and trying to knock us out of the competition. On a bumpy field like that anything can happen. Give them credit. They attacked a lot in the first half and made things very difficult for us.” On the field condition: ôWe just tried to get the ball down field and press there. The field conditions were not great, but they were a little better than some of us thought. The weather could have been much more of a factor.ö On keeper Tony Meola: ôThey couldÆve had a couple of goals today, but Tony (Meola) made the big saves and came up huge.ö On his return after injury: ôThe first half was a little confusing because (Gregory) Goodridge played forward a lot and left a lot of space on the left side, and that brought me out of position a little so Chris Klein had to cover a lot of extra space. My knee felt fine, but IÆm looking forward to having a few weeks where I can strengthen it even more.ö Clint Mathis Describing his first international goal: ôJoe-Max (Moore) did it all on the goal. He was able to beat his guy one-on-one and get to the endline where he pulled a defender and the goalkeeper toward him. Then he pretty much played the ball off my leg and into the goal. He played it back perfectly and I was able to strike the ball well.ö On the field conditions: ôWe struggled a little bit with the field in the first half, but it was the same for both teams. We were able to regroup a little in the second half and it paid off with a few goals. With my shot that hit off the post, the ball kind of bounced up a little and I didnÆt hit it well. On my second shot that the goalkeeper saved I kind of slipped just before I hit the ball.ö Tony Meola (note: Meola recorded his fifth shutout in five career qualifying games) On the team’s defensive effort: ôBruce ArenaÆs teams have always been pretty tough to score against. But youÆve got to have good players, and right now our guys are determined not to give up goals.ö On difficulty playing on a bumpy field: ôThe first half was a little scary. I thought I was clearing a ball it looked so inviting, but at the last second it took a little hop. But I got enough of a piece of it, at least.ö On his career qualifying shutout streak: ôIf I get to stick around long enough, thatÆs sure to end. I think IÆm a better goalkeeper right now than I was then, and IÆd like to think I can still get better. But itÆs always nice to get into a World Cup qualifier and perform well.ö On Barbados: ôThey attacked, no question. They attacked and they came at us, but we expected that. We watched tape of their other two home games, and they got at both teams.ö
