In 2005, DaMarcus Beasley became the first U.S. international to play in a Champions League semifinal with the Dutch club PSV Eindhoven; he was also the club’s leading scorer in the competition with four goals. Now, two injury-hit seasons later, Beasley is faced with the prospect of having to find a new club at season’s end. Just as he was beginning to deliver some promising performances for Manchester City, the club he was loaned to from PSV, Beasley limped off the field with yet another injury 10 days ago.
“It is tough when you finally get a run and then you have to come off because of an injury, you know,” Beasley tells Yanks Abroad. Indeed, it’s this latest injury setback that must have Stuart Pearce questioning whether or not to offer the American winger a permanent contract. It’s that slight frame and proneness to injury that coaches worry about “Everybody says I’m too small in every league that I play in,” he says. “They say you’re too small for MLS, too small for Holland and the same thing here. It’s tough everywhere.”
Beasley reiterates that he wants to stay in Manchester, though nothing has been offered. “I would say it’s 50-50, to be honest,” the 24-year old said of a contract offer. “I haven’t spoken to them and they haven’t spoken to me, so I have no idea.” If Man City doesn’t pick him up, Beasley says he would prefer to remain in England.
