It may have only been an early-round Copa del Rey match, and it may have only been a Third Division Spanish team (Ecija), but David Beckham last night signaled to Real Madrid’s fans and Coach Fabio Capello that he isn’t going down without a fight. Becks scored one and made another as Real swept aside the Third Division club 5-1 at home to move on to the next round. Over the two legs — the first one finished 1-1 — the minnows put in a dogged performance for three out of four halves, but once Beckham opened the scoring in the 49th minute the floodgates proceeded to open. Despite the absence of starters Roberto Carlos, Fabio Cannavaro, Ivan Helguera, Emerson, Robinho and Guti, Real fielded a strong team that saw Ruud Van Nistelrooy paired with Ronaldo for the first time this season. The partnership seemed to come to life in the second half, as Ronaldo scored his first of the season and Van Nistelrooy added another pair to his total of nine in all competitions this season. “I felt good, my fitness felt really good and I felt strong even at the end of the game,” said Beckham, who revealed he has been working on his fitness in his own time to compensate for the lack of minutes he’s been getting on the field. “You need games to get your fitness, but I’ve got my fitness and I’ve kept my fitness by working hard in training and doing extra in the evenings.” If Beckham goes on a good run of form and breaks his way back into the Real first time, MLS could see its hopes of signing the former England captain fade into the distance.
