David Beckham’s may yet have a future at Real Madrid, according to claims from his representatives that he will be offered an improved two-year deal. Both parties will meet next week to discuss Beckham’s contract extension, which his spokesman Simon Oliveira said would improve on his current $11.6 million salary. He also insisted that the former England captain would not be leaving the Bernabeu during the January transfer window, despite interest from several European clubs. Nevertheless Beckham has had a tough go of it with Coach Fabio Capello in charge, starting just a handful of games in the first half of the season. If Capello remains-finishing a full season would be quite an achievement for a Real Madrid coach these days-it is very likely that Beckham will go if he can’t break back into the starting lineup. In that case, no extension would be agreed upon. Beckham would be free to shop elsewhere for a new club and he wouldn’t cost his new team a transfer fee if he moves this summer. Oliveira said the player won’t be making any decisions until March. “He wants to take time over this decision-it will be the last significant deal of his football career,” he said, adding, “Real is the only club we are genuinely talking to at the moment.”
