We’ve heard scores of pundits argue as to whether David Beckham’s MLS crossover will be a success or failure. To no one’s surprise, it’s been a particularly hot button issue in Hollywood, which Victoria and Becks started calling “home” just last week.
However, the Carson Daily Breeze points out that for soccer fans in the L.A. area, who have been somewhat forgotten in the midst of the Beckham media circus, the chances to see their new hero will be few and far between. There may be three and half months left in the 2007 season, but Beckham could be making as few as six MLS regular-season appearances at the Home Depot Center, thanks to an overloaded away schedule and 2008 European Championship qualifying.
Incidentally, four of the five games Beckham would miss to international duty are at the Home Depot Center — Aug. 23 vs. Chivas USA, Sept. 8 vs. Colorado, Sept. 13 vs. Chivas USA (away game), Oct. 13 vs. Toronto FC, and Oct. 18 vs. New York). There’s also that injury he picked up and played with during the final two weeks of last season that could limit his first few appearances with the Galaxy. The paper claims his left ankle isn’t fully healed, so he may play a limited part — or no part at all — in that friendly against Chelsea this Saturday. “I’d love to have him here for every single game, but that’s not the reality of the sport we play and David’s situation,” Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said. But for some fans, that’s not what they signed up for.
