Domestic success remains elusive for Liverpool, currently fourth place in the English Premier League, but perhaps that’s because the English league is the strongest in the world. Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson both hailed the EPL as the best league in the world following Liverpool’s qualification for the Champions League quarterfinals in Milan Tuesday night.

The Reds dispatched Inter Milan in comprehensive fashion with a 1-0 victory at the San Siro and a 3-0 aggregate win over the two legs. The result meant that for the first time in competition history, four clubs from one country would be represented in the Champions League quarterfinals.

“This victory shows the power and strength of the Premier League,” Benitez told reporters after the match. “We have fine clubs who are among the best in Europe, a league that is the same and players of quality who are some of the best in Europe.” In an interview with MUTV, Ferguson asserted: “The Premier League is the strongest in Europe. For a spell it was the Spanish league -I remember about seven or eight years ago they had three teams in the semi-finals…but I think the English game has now reached that level.”
