FIFA President Sepp Blatter had some choice words on a number of topics related to American soccer on Wednesday, reminding MLS that its March-November schedule is “not in the right season” compared to most other leagues around the world and stating that the “basic problem with MLS” is that “the best American players are playing [in Europe].”

Blatter also addressed what seemed to be disappointment that despite the boon of hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup, MLS and U.S. soccer in general are “still struggling to get the position they should have according to the number of [soccer] players there” and it will only come when “the league has its own stadiums.”

In more positive news, Blatter admitted that there is a “general understanding” that the FIFA World Cup will head back to Europe in 2018, leaving the door open for the USA to host another edition in 2022.
