In the opening match of group B in the Confederations Cup, underdog Egypt shook five-time world champions Brazil but finally succumbed 4-3 when Kaka converted a penalty in stoppage time awarded for Ahmed Al Muhamadi's handball on the goal line.

African champions Egypt fought back from two goals down at halftime, scoring twice in a minute early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Mohamed Shawky struck a powerful shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box after clever approach play down the left. On Egypt's next attack, Mohamed Aboutrika floated the ball for Mohamed Zidan to head home his second of the game. Dominating play in the second half, Egypt pressed forward in search of a winner that would have shaken world soccer. Brazil, however, was saved by a late penalty netted by Kaka, who scored Brazil's opening goal.
