In the postgame press conference, U.S. coach Bruce Arena reacted to his teamÆs 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Germany: ''I was really proud of our team, we were a little bit unlucky, if we'd got a break or two we may be in the semifinals of the World Cup . ''We got into the German team which was our game plan, we were confident we could pressure them and create good chances, and I think we did that. ''The big difference in the game was [goalkeeper Oliver] Kahn — he came up with some great saves and kept them in the match in the early going. ''He was probably the difference in the match. ''For the most part we did quite well in restart situations [free kicks] — they are a big team, a strong team and they play to get fouled in the final third and hit the balls into the box from the restarts. ''They are very dangerous [from the free kicks] and that made a difference in the match tonight.'' ''In the match we created a lot of chances, the Germans had two chances and they converted one – and that was the difference in the game today. ''It shows the world we can play. If anyone watched the game tonight and thought that the U.S. didn't belong at this stage in the World Cup – I don't think they looked at the game in the right way. ''We've made a lot of progress, we haven't arrived but I think there's a bright future for the game in the United States. We'd like to get back in 2006 and hopefully we can get there.''
