Another ACC power gets scare

MEN’S NEWS … Like North Carolina, Maryland, Duke and Virginia the day before, Wake Forest made things hard on itself in its mid-week non-conference test. Corben Bone broke a 1-1 tie in the 53rd minute to lift the No. 9 Demon Deacons to a 2-1 victory against Elon on Wednesday night. But for a couple of great saves by Wake keeper Akira Fitzgerald, the Phoenix could have tied the score.

— Next up for Wake Forest is another non-conference game on Saturday against No. 6 Harvard. The Crimson improved to 6-0-0 with a 1-0 win at New Hampshire on Wednesday. Freshman Brian Rogers, who had the goal against UNH, has complemented All-American Andre Akpan beautifully up front. Rogers, who had started as an eighth-grader for his high school team in Bronxville, N.Y., already has four goals and three assists.

* BACK IN GOAL. During UMBC’s 8-0-0 start, much of the attention has been focused on Andrew Bulls and Levi Houapeu, who have combined for 18 goals. But one of the unsung stars has been freshman goalie Phil Saunders. He wasn’t even the starting goalie last year at Maryland’s Perry Hall High School — the starter was Zach Kane, now at Loyola (Md.) — but Saunders’ play with the Baltimore Bays caught the attention of UMBC coach Pete Caringi. “He played the last year of high school as a back and made all-state,” Caringi told the Catonsville Times, “but we knew he was probably the best goalkeeper in the state.”

Wednesday’s Results

* HAT TRICK HERO. Justin Meram, one of the many stars from JC juggernaut Yavapai now scattered across the country, had his first hat trick in No. 18 Michigan’s 5-1 victory over Bowling Green on Wednesday night. After being blown out by Notre Dame, 5-1, on opening day, the Wolverines have been unstoppable. The triumph was their seventh straight — and fifth straight by two or more goals.

Don’t count out Penn State yet

WOMEN’S NEWS … Penn State’s 0-0 tie with Bucknell left it with a 4-4-1 record heading into Big Ten play against No. 13 Michigan State on Sunday (TV: Big Ten Network, live, 12 pm ET). It isn’t where the Nittany Lions, ranked sixth in the Soccer America Preseason Top 25 would like to be, but they have played the toughest schedule in the country.

Penn State has already beaten two Top 25 teams, No. 14 Virginia and No. 16 Connecticut, and its two other wins are over Boston University, which won the 2008 America East title, and James Madison, which reached the final 16 in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Lions lost to three teams in this week’s Top 25, No. 6 Florida State, No. 17 Wake Forest and No. 20 Rutgers, and the fourth loss was to West Virginia, which had been ranked every week up and until this week.

Soccer America MVP Alyssa Naeher extended her shutout streak in goal to 334 minutes, but the Nittany Lions cannot buy a goal. They had 30 shots against Bucknell but couldn’t score. The Lions would have lost but Bucknell’s Christa Matlack hit the post after she had dribbled around the sprawling Naeher.

Scoring has been the Lions’ problem. They only have 11 goals in nine games. Katie Schoepfer, who entered the season with 34 goals for Penn State, has scored only once in nine games.

Wednesday’s Results

* LOBOS REMAIN UNBEATEN. One of the hottest teams in women’s soccer is New Mexico, which matched its win total of each of the last four seasons with its eighth victory (to go along with two ties) in a 3-1 victory over Northern Colorado on Wednesday.

Sophomore Jennifer Williams has been a big factor in the Lobos’ success. Her goal 235 seconds into Wednesday’s game was her sixth gamewinner of the season. The biggest win of the season came last Sunday when the Lobos won at Texas, 1-0, thanks to — you guessed it — another Williams goal.

Coach Kit Vela was particularly impressed how her players responded after the disappointment of tying Rice, 1-1, two days earlier when they gave up a goal in the 88th minute. “They played hard for 90 minutes,” she said, “and never let down.”

ACC powerhouses survive scares

MEN’S NEWS … Four ranked ACC teams were in action at home against unfancied opponents on Tuesday night, and they all won by one-goal margins, three on golden goals.

— No. 2 North Carolina needed a goal from sophomore Billy Schuler in the 98th minute to eke out a 2-1 win over East Tennessee State, which went into the game with one win in five matches. Freshman Enzo Martinez played a through ball into the box to Schuler, who chipped ETSU goalkeeper Scott Rosman from 10 yards.

— Despite playing most of the game with a man advantage and having a 29-7 advantage in shots, all No. 8 Maryland could muster was a goal by Jason Herrick with 12 seconds remaining in the first half for a 1-0 win over St. Peter’s. Freshman defender Taylor Kemp preserved the win when he headed Rumen Kerekov‘s shot away with goalie Will Swaim beaten with eight minutes left in the game. “We got the win and we got the shutout,” Coach Sasho Cirovski said. “We got some guys into the game and they came in and performed quite well.”

— Junior Cole Grossman‘s goal in the 102nd minute off a pass from freshman Andrew Wenger gave No. 12 Duke a 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington at soggy Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils had plenty of chances and outshot the Seahawks, 11-0, in a scoreless first half. “We should have been up two or three-nil,” said Coach John Kerr. “When you don’t capitalize on that play and those opportunities, you allow teams to get a little confident.”

— Neil Barlow‘s goal in the 92nd minute gave No. 13 Virginia a 2-1 win over George Washington for Coach George Gelnovatch‘s 200th career victory. “Winning is a hard business,” Gelnovatch said. “Any time a program and a head coach can accumulate 200 wins, it’s not an easy thing to do. This game was a reminder of that.” On the winning goal, Chris Agorsor fed Barlow in the box, collecting the first assist of his career.

* UMBC REMAINS PERFECT. Sophomore Andrew Bulls, the nation’s leading scorer, did it again scoring on a free kick in the 44th minute and leading UMBC to a 1-0 win Loyola (Md.) before 1,505 fans at UMBC Stadium. Bulls has scored 10 goals with at least one goal in all but one of UMBC’s eight games, all wins.

Freshman goalie Phil Saunders made three game-saving stops in the final two minutes to preserve the win for the Retrievers, the first team in the country to go 8-0-0, their best start ever as a Division I program. It was also their first win ever at home against Loyola and only their second in 22 games against their Baltimore neighbor.

* UCSB DOWNS TRI U-17S. Joe Eubanks‘ goal in the final minute of overtime gave UC Santa Barbara a 2-1 win over the touring Mexico under-17 national team before a crowd of 8,425. The Tri U-17s and Gauchos had traded goals on either side of halftime. Daniel Guzman put Mexico ahead in the 38th minute, and Peter McGlynn equalized in the 49th minute. Recent FC Dallas signing Bryan Leyva started for Mexico.

Newcomers lead George Mason revival

WOMEN’S NEWS … George Mason, one of the great names in women’s soccer is on the comeback trail. The Patriots defeated UMBC, 4-0, on Tuesday night and improved to 8-1-0, their best start since 1993. They need only two more wins for their first 10-win season since 1994. George Mason was the first team other than North Carolina to win an NCAA women’s national championship. It followed up on its 1985 title with a second-place finish in 1993.

First-year players have been key to the turnaround for the Patriots, who won only five games in 2008. Freshman Diana Kallenberger had two goals and an assist against UMBC to give her a team-high seven goals and four assists. Jamaican international Omolyn Davis, a transfer from NAIA power Lindsey Wilson, has six goals and three assists. Freshman Katie Frey picked up her fourth shutout of the season against UMBC.

“The girls did a great job of being professional,” said Patriots coach Diane Drake. “We told them we needed to find a way to win while still preserving players for Thursday.” That’s when GMU hosts preseason favorite James Madison in the CAA opener.

Oregon schools join elite

WOMEN’S NEWS … Oregon women’s soccer is more than the Portland Pilots, the two-time national champions (2002 and 2005) and the top-drawing program in the country. Oregon State and Oregon both joined UP in this week’s Soccer America Women’s Top 25, giving the state of Oregon three teams in the Top 25 for the first time.

Oregon State (7-1-0) has a seven-game winning streak following its 3-1 win over Denver on Sunday. The Beavers have already surpassed their 2008 win total of six games and equaled the seven games they won in 2007. “We’ve been in the building [process] these past three years,” Melissa Peck, who scored in both games at the Oregon State Nike Invitational, told the Corvallis Gazette-Times. “To finally win some games, against some pretty good teams, it’s kind of special.” The Beavers will put their winning streak on the line on Friday when they travel to Portland.

Oregon (6-1-1) has won five games in a row and gone seven straight without a defeat. Junior Jen Stoltenberg‘s sixth of the season gave the Ducks a 1-0 win over Dartmouth on Sunday at the Oregon State tournament and earned her a place on this week’s Soccer America Women’s Team of the Week. “Our team was patient and persistent in our attack,” Oregon coach Tara Erickson said afterwards. “I think we’ve learned, from some of our previous games, how to manage the game.”

Oregon has had more success than OSU in recent years but has never advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Ducks went 6-1-2 in Pac-10 play and were 12-6-2 overall but did not get a bid. Oregon State’s only NCAA Tournament berth came in 1994.

* MONDAY’S RESULTS:
Campbell 1 Radford 0
New Mexico State 0 West Texas A&M 2
Seton Hall 1 Iona 0
South Carolina State 1 Wofford o (OT)
USC Upstate 1 Coastal Carolina 5

* INJURY REPORT. Senior Brittney Harrison, fourth all-time on Texas Tech’s scoring list for points and goals, was lost for the season after suffering an ACL knee injury in Friday night’s 2-1 loss to Alabama. Red Raider coach Tom Stone described Harrison, who had five goals in seven games, as “easily been the most dangerous player we’ve had.”

* RECORD BOOK. Junior Kaity Mattsson became Nicholls State’s all-time leading scorer when her goal in the Colonels’ 7-1 win over Texas Southern on Sunday gave her 18 goals in her career.

* LEADING SCORERS:
1. Morgan Marlborough, Nebraska 13
2. Rachel King, Louisiana Tech 11
3. Kelley O’Hara, Stanford 10
4. Kiersten Dallstream, Washington State 9
4. Maddy Elder, Clemson 9
(Through games played Sept. 20.)

Akron puts some Zip in its attack

MEN’S NEWS … Akron confirmed its No. 1 ranking in the Soccer America Men’s Top 25 by capturing the tournament it hosted this weekend with wins over Indiana (1-0) and Saint Louis (4-0).

The Zips, who lost 2008 Hermann Trophy winner Steve Zakuani to MLS’s Seattle Sounders FC, has been getting their scoring by committee. Sophomore Michael Nanchoff, son of former U.S. international George Nanchoff, had the winning goal against Indiana on a free kick. Sophomore Teal Bunbury, who scored twice against SLU, is the son of former Canada star Alex Bunbury.

Sophomores Kofi Sarkodie and Darlington Nagbe connected on a highlight-reel goal to open the scoring against Saint Louis. Freshman Yoram Mwila, who first came to Ohio from Zambia in 2006 to attend Brad Friedel‘s Premier Soccer Academies as part of the Grassroots Soccer Partnership, finished out the scoring with his third goal of the season.

Akron dominated the struggling Billikens, outshooting them, 21-3.  “If we are on the ball enough, we are going to find the seams,” Akron coach Caleb Porter said. “That’s what happened today, and we put the game away.”

* CROWD COUNT:
— The sell-out crowd of 2,443 fans for the Akron-Indiana game set a record for Lee Jackson Field.

— No. 2 North Carolina handed Duke its first loss of the season, winning, 1-0, before 4,439 fans, the second largest men’s crowd in Fetzer Field history.

— Missouri State spoiled a Missouri Valley record crowd of 5,609 at Creighton’s Morrison Stadium, beating No. 4 Bluejays, 1-0.

Carolina attack suddenly goes quiet

WOMEN’S NEWS … The North Carolina attack that scored seemingly at will against UCLA (7-2) and Notre Dame (6-0) couldn’t buy a goal on Sunday. The Tar Heels piled up 40 shots but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with unranked Auburn. The result snapped the defending national champions’ 17-game winning streak and dropped them from the top spot in the Soccer America Women’s Top 25 for the first time this season.

The result at the Duke Nike Classic came two days after a very sluggish performance in a 1-0 victory over LSU. To make matters worse, North Carolina star Nikki Washington was injured early in the second half of the LSU game and didn’t play against Auburn.

The closest Carolina came to scoring against Auburn was in the 86th minute when Casey Nogueira hit the crossbar with a free kick. Goalie Amy Howard was superb for Auburn with 12 saves, including a diving stop on an Alyssa Rich shot in overtime.

North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance blamed the result on his players’ atrocious work in the final third of the field. “‘We could have taken a film of today’s game and shown you every poor finishing decision that was possible,” he said. One bright spot for North Carolina was the play of Canadian freshman Ranee Premji in her first extended appearance for the Tar Heels.

* AGGIES’ SHOCKER. Portland, who was No. 3 in last week’s rankings, had won its first seven games by a margin of 22-2, but it was upset by Texas A&M, 3-1, Friday night in front of 3,542 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Junior Whitney Hooper scored two goals for A&M, which looked great in its opening game, a 3-0 win over USC, but has since suffered losses to Purdue, California and North Carolina.

“It’s nice to be winning again,” said Aggies coach G Guerrieri. “We’ve played a very difficult schedule, but we played those difficult games to get better and they helped us win this one today. Portland is a great team.”

* STANFORD ON TOP. Stanford, which beat Colorado, 4-0, and Wisconsin, 6-0, at its Nike Invitational to improve its record to 9-0-0, took over for North Carolina as the top team in the Soccer America Women’s Top 25.

On Sunday, the Cardinal overwhelmed Wisconsin with its multi-pronged attack. Kelley O’Hara scored her 10th goal, Christen Press had a goal and two assists, and Teresa Noyola was in superb form with a pair of assists. Freshman Mariah Nogueira added two goals to become the sixth Stanford player to have a multi-goal game.

This weekend’s results

* PERFECT STARTS:
Louisiana Tech 10-0-0
Stanford 9-0-0
Boston College 8-0-0
Maryland 8-0-0
South Carolina 8-0-0
Mississippi State 8-0-0
Chattanooga 5-0-0

Derby night on the West Coast

MEN’S NEWS … No. 6 UCLA survived its first game since seniors Brian Perk and Michael Stephens left to prepare for the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt, but it wasn’t easy. The Bruins went down a goal against Cal State Fullerton after only four minutes, but rallied on goals by freshman Evan Raynr and junior Shawn Singh to defeat the Titans, 2-1. In his first collegiate start in goal, sophomore Brian Rowe, Perk’s backup, was called upon to make five saves.

“At the end of the day, it was a good win after going down 1-0 and not having the best start,” said UCLA coach Jorge Salcedo. “As the first half wore on, we got better and had more energy and were able to get the win.”

* DERBY NIGHT. Thursday was derby night on the West Coast, where three other big matches were played. Defender A.J. Soares matched his career total with two goals in No. 8 California’s 3-0 win at San Francisco. He also had an assist on Davis Paul‘s opening goal.

In the Bay Area Classic’s other game, Stanford ended its six-game winless streak against Santa Clara and beat the Broncos, 2-0, on goals by juniors Bobby Warshaw and Daniel Leon. The visiting team also won the Pacific Northwest derby as Portland defeated Washington, 2-1, on goals by Keith Grubisich and Michael Nielsen.

Free-kick specialists extend Kentucky and UMBC streaks

MEN’S NEWS … Freshman midfielder Matt Lodge, the former English prison guard, scored his second goal on a free kick from 30 or more yards away in the last two games to lead No. 25 Kentucky to a 1-0 win over Alabama A&M and improve its record to 5-0-0, equaling the best start to a season in the 19-year history of the program.

“Credit goes to Matt Lodge,” UK head coach Ian Collins said. “He was feeling awful today, battling a bit of sickness. He really showed some toughness and guts to play as hard as he did tonight.”

The goal was Lodge’s team-high fourth of the year.  In his last game, Lodge scored both of UK’s goals in a 2-1 comeback win over SIU-Edwardsville.

— UMBC sophomore forward Andrew Bulls scored ninth goal of the season — and his fifth game-winning goal — to lead the Retrievers to a 1-0 win over neighboring Towson. UMBC tied a school Division I record with the 6-0-0 start, equaling the 1999 squad, which produced the nation’s best record of 19-1-2.

Bulls was fouled 23 yards from the goal, and his ensuing free kick went to the right of the four-man wall and just inside the right post, keeping his streak intact of having scored in every game.

Wednesday’s Scoreboard

* INJURY REPORT: Saint Louis forward Jimmy Holmes was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s 3-1 win against Loyola (Ill.). The senior will apply for a medical hardship.

Fourth broken foot sidelines Notre Dame star

WOMEN’S NEWS … When Notre Dame co-captain Courtney Rosen was sidelined with a broken foot last month, it was the fourth time she has broken her foot in five years. What made the injury different was that it was the first time she has broken her left foot. Because of stress fractures to her right foot, Rosen has a screw placed in that foot.

Rosen was walking from the locker room to the practice field when her left foot gave out. “It was like a death in the family when she broke her foot,” teammate Michele Weissenhofer, who has also battled injuries, told the Notre Dame Observer. “That just shows how big of a part of the team she is.”

Without Rosen, a second-team All-Big East selection in 2008, the Irish have struggled, losing three of their last four games.

* TOP 25 ACTION: No. 22 Indiana dominated play against state rival Butler, but all the Hoosiers could muster was a goal by Orianica Velasquez Herrera in the 79th minute for a 1-0 victory that improved IU’s record to 7-1-0. The Hoosiers were stymied by keeper Jessica Schein, who made five saves. They also had Carly Samp‘s shot glance off the far post.

* HAT TRICK HERO:
— Kirby Zak scored three goals for Sam Houston State in its 6-0 win over Texas Southern.

Hill on a roll for unbeaten Michigan State

WOMEN’S NEWS … Last year, it was Laura Heyboer who carried Michigan State with 21 goals in 24 games as freshman. This year it’s senior Lauren Hill who leads the Spartans with eight goals in six games.

Hill’s goal with under a minute to go in the first half broke a scoreless deadlock against Detroit and Michigan State went on to win, 2-0, extending its unbeaten streak to 16 games at DeMartin Stadium — 9-0-2 last year and 5-0-0 so far in 2009.

After a shot by Samantha Cook bounced off the crossbar, Hill scored off the rebound with a header to extend her own streak of having scored in every game for the 5-0-1 Spartans.

“She has been on a roll and we want to keep it that way,” said Coach Tom Saxton. “Her goal today was an opportunistic one; she was in the right place and the right time and took advantage of the loose ball.”

Hill’s goal gives her 36 for her career and puts her within three of the MLS record held by Michelle Wise.

Tuesday’s Scoreboard

* RECORD BOOK:
— Rachel King needed only eight games to break the Louisiana Tech record for goals in a season, collecting her 10th goal of the season in a 2-0 win over Grambling State that improve the Lady Techsters’ record to 8-0-0.

Maryland’s attack breaks out

MEN’S NEWS … Having lost his entire backline — including Rodney Wallace, Omar Gonzalez and A.J. DeLaGarza, who all start in MLS —  Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski was preoccupied with defensive issues in the 2009 preseason. But with only four goals in their first three games, scoring was the problem early on. That all changed Tuesday night as No. 7 Maryland routed Duquesne, 7-0, in the pouring rain.

Matt Kassel scored on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 13th minute opened the scoring. Fellow sophomore Casey Townsend put the game away with three goals.

“It was a very gratifying performance,” Cirovski said. “We’ve been talking about getting a little crisper in finishing and tonight I thought we made some good runs and good crosses and had some good goals. We showed a little more menace in our attack and we didn’t give up after we scored one. To be fair to Duquesne, they had two games over the weekend and I think they were a little fatigued and had a hard time keeping up with our energy and pace.”

— Senior Ronnie Bouemboue scored two goals and set up another as No. 21 North Carolina State defeated Campbell, 5-1. Next up for the Wolfpack: Maryland at home on Saturday.

— Neil Barlow‘s goal in the 38th minute was all No. 25 Virginia could muster from an 18-2 advantage in shots and the Cavaliers settled for a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary’s. They play Wake Forest on Friday.

Tuesday’s Scoreboard

* HAT TRICK HEROES:
— Townsend’s hat trick for Maryland was his first in two seasons with the Terrapins.
— Honduran Romario Blandon‘s three goals gave VCU a 4-3 win over city rival Richmond.

Loyola Marymount highlights WCC turnaround

MEN’S NEWS … What a difference a year makes! Last year at this time, no WCC men’s team had a record above .500. This year, every WCC team has a record above .500 except Santa Clara, which is 2-2-0.

The biggest win to date came Sunday night when Loyola Marymount upset unbeaten UC Santa Barbara, 2-1, on the road for Coach Paul Krumpe‘s 100 career win. Rafael Baca and Phil Da Silva spotted LMU to a 2-0 lead and redshirt freshman Max Young shut out the Gauchos for the first 86 minutes.

WCC RECORDS
Loyola Marymount (3-1-0)
San Diego (3-1-0)
St. Mary’s (2-0-2)
Gonzaga (3-1-2)
San Francisco (2-1-0)
Portland (2-1-1)
Santa Clara (2-2-0)

* DEMON EXPLOSION. DePaul scored 13 goals in 20 games last season but had eight in two games over the weekend. The Blue Demons upset previously unbeaten UC Irvine, 3-2, on Friday and cruised to a 5-1 victory over Buffalo two days later to claim the championship of the Marquette Invitational.

The wins gave DePaul three in a row for the week, and in all three games Soccer America Player of the Week Steffen Vroom opened the scoring. “It’s great when he scores because it relaxes everybody,” said teammate Mark Plotkin. “It gives us the confidence to score even more goals.”

Upstarts are off to perfect starts

WOMEN’S NEWS … Of the nine NCAA Division I women’s teams who are still unbeaten and untied after Week 4, three have never made the NCAA Tournament:

— Louisiana Tech (7-0-0) set a school record for goals and shots (52) in its 12-0 win over Delta State on Sunday. It was 6-0 at the half, and even after Kevin Sherry pulled his starters, it was all Lady Techsters. Sub Brittany Coffinbargar needed only 17 minutes to record her first three goals of the season. Sherry has turned things around in three seasons at the WAC school. The Lady Techsters were 2-14-1 in 2007 and improved to 10-5-5 in 2008, tying Minnesota, Texas State and Washington for the biggest improvement.

— Mississippi State (6-0-0) is off to its best start ever. The Bulldogs defeated East Tennessee State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon thanks to a pair of goals by Kat Walsh. “She has really been playing excellent soccer the last two weekends,” Coach Neil Macdonald said. One of the top freshmen for MSU is Monica Alvarado, who played for MLS club FC Dallas’ girls program and has played at the U-17, U-20 and now senior levels for Mexico.

— Marshall (6-0-0) has been a model of efficiency, parlaying nine goals into six wins, the most recent being a 1-0 victory over Ohio on Sunday. Then again, the Herd hasn’t needed much offense. It has yet to allow a goal. Erika Duncan‘s goal in the 87th minute ended Ohio dominance in the series (seven wins and a tie in eight previous games). “We really wanted this win,” Marshall coach Kevin Long said. “We wanted to break the spell that Ohio had over us.”

Freshmen Martinez and Belshaw come up big

MEN’S NEWS … The ACC season opened with two glamor showdowns, and a pair of freshmen played huge roles in the outcomes.

Enzo Martinez, the Uruguayan-born South Carolina prep legend, was the instigator in No. 2 North Carolina’s 2-1 comeback win over previously unbeaten N.C. State before 4,200 fans in Chapel Hill.

James Belshaw, who was developed in English pro club Walsall’s youth system and even suited up for a League One (third division) game against Carlisle last season, came up big in goal for Duke, helping the No. 20 Blue Devils edge No. 21 Virginia, 1-0, in overtime before 4,692 fans in Charlottesville.

Martinez, better known for his scoring (182 goals at Rock Hill Northwestern High School) than playmaking, was fouled for the penalty kick Zach Loyd converted (twice) and fed Michael Farfan on the winning goal. The Cal State Fullerton transfer took possession outside the box, beat a defender at the edge of the area, then blasted a shot that ricocheted off the right post for the goal.

Virginia had the edge in regulation, but the 6-foot-2 Belshaw was a dominating force in goal. The Blue Devils won on Daniel Tweed-Kent’s goal following a flurry of shots in the second overtime.

“We had an excellent game plan,” Duke coach John Kerr said. “We did our homework on Virginia and some of their weapons were not necessarily nullified, but less of a threat. We were fortunate a couple of times that they missed some opportunities, but we dug our heels in and worked together and found a way to win the game.”

* THIS WEEK’S TOP 25. Akron and North Carolina remained 1-2 in the Soccer America Men’s Top 25. Wake Forest, Creighton and Dartmouth each moved up one spot to complete the top five. Freshmen go to work for Santa Clara

WOMEN’S NEWS … Facing a make-or-break weekend, Santa Clara came through with wins over a pair of Top 10 team, Notre Dame (2-0) and Purdue (3-1), and won its Santa Clara Classic on goal difference over No. 2 Stanford.

Coming off a 4-12-4 record and their first sub-.500 season since 1983, the young Broncos have been under enormous pressure. They opened with shutout wins over San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara, then slumped to losses at Utah and Maryland.

Goalkeeper Bianca Henninger kept the Broncos in the first game with three saves in the opening minutes. Senior Jordan Angeli had the decisive goal against Notre Dame with a 35-yard rocket, and Santa Clara’s freshmen then went to work for the rest of the weekend.

Lauren Matheson added the second goal against Notre Dame. On Sunday, freshman Allie Vernon celebrated her first career start by scoring twice, the first just 168 seconds into the game when floated a ball over Purdue goalkeeper Jenny Bradfisch. Another freshman, Amanda Webster, had the third goal.

“I think [this weekend] really builds our confidence,” said Bronco coach Jerry Smith.  “Those were solid wins over two top-10 teams, and also NCAA Tournament teams, and it’s always good to win own tournament.  We had a number of contributors and a solid team effort over two games.”

“Our freshmen have also been making a number of impactful contributions whether it be goals, assists or significant plays,” said Smith.  “Olivia [Klei], Amanda and Lauren have been playing well in every game, and this was Allie’s first weekend and she was very good in both games.”
