[CHAMPIONS LEAGUE REACTION/VIDEO] The results for English powerhouses Chelsea and Liverpool were exactly the opposite what you would have predicted when they took to the field Wednesday on Day 2 of the UEFA Champions League. Chelsea, which has yet to win an EPL game under new manager Avram Grant and was coming off a 1-1 tie at home to Rosenborg in its Champions League opener, won, 2-1, at Valencia, which took a seven-game winning streak into the game. Unbeaten in its first 11 games of the season, Liverpool lost, 1-0, at home to Marseille, which had won just one of its first nine French league game.

What They’re Saying
“I feel OK. The only difference is in training you have the press – and they want to come back home and sleep with you. They are just always there.”

Revs riddle Dallas defense to lift U.S. Open Cup
Losers in all four of its previous finals, New England struck upon a novel approach for the 2007 U.S. Open Cup final Wednesday against host Dallas: attack and exploit. And win. The Revs, which had scored a grand total of two goals in losing the 2001 Open Cup final and 2002, 2005, and 2006 MLS Cups, thumped FCD, 3-2, to capture its first trophy with a blend of youth and experience.
Quakes name John Doyle GM and ponder venues
The two men most responsible for the rebirth of the San Jose Earthquakes weren’t in attendance, but those who were there- including former Clash and Quakes defender John Doyle, who was named Wednesday as the team’s new general manager – heaped praise upon Oakland A’s co-owners John Fisher and Lewis Wolff, the money men behind the MLS expansion team. “I think a lot of it comes back to local ownership,” says A’s president Michael Crowley, who will fill the same role for the Quakes. “The team that was here previously never had that and I think you need that in any sport, baseball or soccer or whatever sport you name. Or whatever business you name, for that matter.”
Bulls hope to clinch playoff spot in Toronto
[TV PREVIEW] As they survey BMO Field and see the crowd and hear its passion, the players, coaches and officials of Red Bull New York must wonder if it will ever come to pass for them, this seemingly ideal melding of location, facility, and fandom. Red Bull Park is still years away. League games in the Meadowlands are ridiculously expensive and drained of atmosphere, except for the nine-goal appearance of David Beckham in early August.
Newcomers Emilio, Angel lead MLS scorers
[MLS STATS] With three games left, D.C. United’s Brazilian striker Luciano Emilio is the first MLS player to score 20 regular-season since Carlos Ruiz (24) and Taylor Twellman (23) did in 2002. With three more strikes Emilio would tie D.C. United’s single-season record, set by Raul Diaz Arce in 1996. The MLS record is 27, set by Roy Lassiter while with Tampa Bay in 1996. The second leading scorer this season is another South American newcomer: New York’s Juan Pablo Angel
Chelsea’s captain courageous wants to play
[MARQUEE MATCHUP] Chelsea captain John Terry hopes to play against Valencia Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League with a protective face mask just three days after undergoing surgery for an elbow he suffered Saturday when he took an forearm from American Clint Dempsey in Chelsea’s 0-0 tie with Fulham.
Revs and Dallas vie for elusive triumph
Two teams not accustomed to winning championships meet in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final Wednesday (8 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel) at Pizza Hut Park with one of them assured of winning a rare title. Ten years ago, Dallas won the Open Cup by beating D.C. United on penalties in its only final appearance. New England has reached one Open Cup final (2001) and played in three MLS Cups (2002, 2005, 2006), but has yet to win. The last two years, it lost those MLS Cups at Pizza Hut Park; can the third time be the charm?
What They’re Saying
“There will be no loan moves or short-term contracts. He is under contract to the Galaxy.”
— A spokesman for David Beckham puts to rest rumors that Beckham may spend the MLS offseason away from the Galaxy. (Telegraph)
Valiant United edged on away goal
When Guadalajara needed one of its attacking stars to step up, Ramon Morales did. When D.C. United needed someone to do something in the offensive third, nobody came through. Morales nailed a golazo in the 64th minute at Jalisco Stadium Tuesday night, stepping into a loose ball rolling along the penalty arc and drilling it high past keeper Troy Perkins. Thus Guadalajara won the Copa Sudamericana second leg, 1-0, and the series on away goals (1-0) with the teams deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate.

United’s Ferguson happy with 1-0 win over Roma
[CHAMPIONS LEAGUE REACTION] It was not the 7-1 rout of last spring, but Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will take three points that came from Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Roma in their Old Trafford rematch. Wayne Rooney scored the only goal of the Champions League game with his first goal of the season after missing more than a month with a broken bone in his foot.

What They’re Saying
“I want to continue on as coach. I don’t feel my job is done yet with this team. We had a lot of youngster here and this was a first World Cup for so many of our players. With the Olympics up next, having players with a world championship under their belt completely changes them because the only way to get experience is to play.”
— U.S. women’s coach Greg Ryan hopes to stay on the job despite his team’s disappointing third-place finish at the 2007 Women’s World Cup. (Ticker)
OFF THE POST: Homeland Security snares Real Madrid president
Real Madrid president Juan Ramon Calderon Ramos flew to New York last week to catch the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor.” But Calderon, 56, only caught the last part of the performance because he had been detained at JFK Airport by authorities. According the Spanish daily Diario As, they confused him with a 26-year-old suspected criminal with a similar name, Jose Ramos. Calderon was released after a call to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed his true identity.

[MARQUEE MATCHUP] Manchester United hosts Roma at Old Trafford Tuesday in a repeat of their memorable UEFA Champions League encounter last spring. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson doesn’t expect a repeat of the match that ended with a 7-1 victory for United in one of the most spectacular displays of attacking soccer in recent history
Sharp D.C. United takes on Guadalajara
All that stands between D.C. United and a spot in the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals is at least 90 minutes of madness in Estadio Jalisco, one of the cathedrals of Mexican soccer, when it faces Guadalajara in the second leg on Tuesday (9 pm ET, live, Fox Sports en Espanol; 11 pm, delay, Fox Soccer Channel). United leads the two-leg series, 2-1, and will advance with a tie, but that’s not the mindset likely to be adopted, at least not early in the match.
The Pot and the Kettle
The angry reaction by Chivas USA players and Coach Preki to the antics and purported dives by Fire attacker Cuauhtemoc Blanco is, in the eyes of some opponents, a case of the stripes getting a hefty dose of their own medicine.
Clint Dempsey to go unpunished
[AMERICANS ABROAD] Fulham’s Clint Dempsey will not be punished for throwing an elbow that broke the cheekbone of Chelsea’s John Terry. Referee Martin Atkinson apparently saw the incident and did not call a foul or include it in his game report to the English FA. Under FIFA guidelines, retroactive action is only supposed to take place if incident was not seen by the referee or if there has been a huge error in judgment.
