U.S. U-20s face typical European obstacle in methodical Poles

[USA-POLAND PREVIEW] Before the FIFA U-20 World Cup started, U.S. coach Thomas Rongen described Poland, which the USA faces Tuesday in probably a must-win game in Montreal, as “a typical Eastern European country that’s going to be very hard to break down and very methodical in their approach.” To those attributes can be added opportunism and determination and resiliency. Poland upset Brazil, 1-0, on the opening day of play with a long-range free kick by Grzegorz Krychowiak and a staunch defensive display following the ejection of Real Madrid’s Krzysztof Krol in the 27th minute.

USA must put it all together to get a result against Paraguay

[COPA AMERICA PREVIEW] The glaring disparity in talent that was evident when Argentina beat the USA, 4-1, last Thursday won’t be as prevalent Monday when the Americans take on Paraguay in Barinas, Venezuela, yet Paraguay looked tremendous in its 5-0 win against Colombia, playing a fluid, organized game unlike its rigid, defense-first squads at previous World Cups. If the Americans are again rocked back on their heels, they could be chasing the game for longer than they did against Argentina.

No festivities in Toronto on Canada Day

The U.S. U-20s should take heart. As bad as they played in their 1-1 tie with South Korea on Saturday in Montreal, it could have been worse. Host Canada opened play before a sellout crowd of almost 20,000 fans at Toronto’s BMO Field — on July 1, Canada Day no less — and bombed. Dale Mitchell‘s U-20s fell to Chile, 3-0, in a match they were outshot 19-2.

Dreadful Americans escape with tie in Under-20 World Cup opener

The USA survived the worst performance by a U.S. national youth team at a world championship in recent memory to earn a 1-1 tie with South Korea Saturday in their opening game at the Under-20 World Cup. Much of the announced sellout crowd of 55,800 at Olympic Stadium had left after witnessing Poland stun South American champion Brazil, 1-0, the opening game of the Group D doubleheader, and the pro-Korean crowd that remained watched the Americans give the ball away time and again and struggle to keep up with the quick Koreans on the artificial turf.

What They’re Saying

“Losing a match doesn’t mean that everything is wrong, just as winning a match doesn’t mean everything is right. Brazil always has to win, that’s a fact. The pressure and the demands are something we have to get used to. We have to find a way to get over this.”

USA wilts in Copa opener against Argentina

Back to the real world. The Copa America in any South American nation is a long way from the Gold Cup anywhere in the United States. An Argentine lineup featuring several world-class stars pummeled a makeshift American team, 4-1, to end the 11-match unbeaten run of Coach Bob Bradley. After a courageous hour of surviving at 1-1 with sweat and grit, the U.S. resolve melted in a searing display of skill and speed by the tournament favorites.
