Is Convey good fit for Quakes?

[MLS] At least one MLS coach believes allocations should be used to bring U.S. players back to Major League Soccer, and a rival team has done just that. San Jose has used its slot atop the allocation rankings to sign midfielder Bobby Convey, whose contract with English club Reading was terminated last week. Terms of the deal and his salary details have not been announced. He is scheduled to report to the team in the next two weeks, after the Quakes play two preseason games in California.

“Every game is difficult and it’s going to be a very tough group. It’s a key match, for sure, but it’s not a final and there are other vital games ahead. We’ve got nine other matches and every one of them is crucial to our hopes. If things don’t work out for us in one match, then there’s no need to worry, as long as we pick up as many points as possible in the other games.”

‘Wiser’ Hejduk answers the U.S. call yet again

[USA-MEXICO COUNTDOWN] For all the major matches played by Frankie Hejduk against Mexico during more than a decade of service to the U.S. national team, he still regrets missing the big one played in his backyard. “I was on the bench, freezing my butt off,” he recalls of the 2001 Hexagonal opener played in Columbus won by the USA, 2-0. “It’s a lot better to be playing in those games than watching them, so hopefully I’ll be out there playing.”

AEG and Milan haggle over Beckham

[MLS] The opening salvos between AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani and Anschutz Entertainment Group CEO Tim Leiweke have been fired, and they aren’t likely to subside. Another episode in the Saga of David Beckham unfolded Friday when Leiweke told the Los Angeles Times AEG had rejected an initial offer for the midfielder, who has expressed his desire to stay rather than return to the Galaxy when his loan is due to expire in about a month.

“At the moment Milan are more important to me than the money. I want to think about football first and about my career. It’s important for me to be allowed to stay at Milan permanently so I can have the chance to play regularly and to be part of England’s World Cup 2010 squad. I haven’t spoken to the Galaxy yet, but someone is doing this on my behalf. I am really hoping that a deal can be reached.”

Balanced squad picked for Mexico showdown

[USA-MEXICO COUNTDOWN] There wasn’t all that much suspense regarding which of the European-based players would be selected by Coach Bob Bradley for the Hexagonal opener against Mexico Wednesday in Columbus. So the inclusion of Jozy Altidore, who just went on loan to CD Xerez, and the exclusion of Freddy Adu, stuck on the bench while on loan to Monaco from Benfica, is notable for Adu’s notoriety, but not at all surprising.
