Nakazawa gets another goal and assist for UCLA

MEN’S NEWS … No. 2 UCLA got another goal and assist from Kyle Nakazawa, giving him eight goals and four assists in the last seven games, but the Bruins were held to a 2-2 draw at San Diego State on Sunday.

Nick Cardenas put SDSU 2-1 ahead with a header in the 81st minute but he was red carded a minute later, forcing the Aztecs to play the rest of regulation and overtime with 10 players.

On the ensuing free kick after Cardenas’ red card, Nakazawa set a ball into the penalty area, where Sean Alvarado headed it to David Estrada, who headed in a wide-open shot for the game-tying goal.

No. 1 Stanford’s O’Hara adds to goal haul

WOMEN’S NEWS … Senior Kelley O’Hara got the first hat trick of her Stanford career to lead the No. 1 Cardinal to a 5-1 victory at No. 25 Oregon in Pac-10 play Sunday afternoon.

O’Hara has 15 goals for the season — tying her for fifth on Stanford’s single-season list — and 46 career goals — No. 5 on Stanford’s all-time list. Continuing her recovery from an early-season illness, sophomore Lindsay Taylor had a goal and two assists to give her two goals and five assists in her last three games.

The five goals marked the sixth time in 13 wins that Stanford scored five or more goals in a game. “I still think we have a ways to go,” Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe cautioned. “But we’re growing together, the team chemistry’s great and we’re getting sharper each game.”

Palermo rescues Argentina in wild finish

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] Martin Palermo‘s goal in third minute of stoppage time saved Argentina from disaster, giving it a 2-1 win over last-place Peru in Buenos Aires that moved it into fourth place in the South American zone with one game to play. Palermo’s goal came three minutes after Hernan Rengifo had tied the score for Peru. Visiting Chile clinched the third South American berth in next year’s World Cup with its 4-2 win over Colombia, and Uruguay moved into fifth place with a 2-1 win over Ecuador in Quito.

Amazing! [Honduras-USA Video]

[WORLD CUP 2010 QUALIFYING] For the sixth straight time — and the third time on the road — the USA qualified for the World Cup. In surely the wildest qualifier the USA has ever played, it came back after going 1-0 down seconds into the second half to beat Honduras, 3-2, at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula. The second half featured five goals — two on free kicks — and at least a dozen clear chances for both teams, but the game wasn’t decided until Carlos Pavon — the former L.A. Galaxy striker and Catracho elder statesman — skied a penalty kick over the bar in the 87th minute. The surprise U.S. hero: Conor Casey with the tying and brilliantly taken go-ahead goals — his first two at the senior national team level …

The Ticos completed the quartet when Marcos Urena scored in the 120th minute to give them a 2-1 win over the United Arab Emirates in Saturday’s late game.

West Coast upsets highlight Friday action

MEN’S NEWS … Visiting Washington pulled Friday’s biggest upset when the Huskies beat No. 4 California, 2-0, in Berkeley. UW got goals from Matt Van Houten (diving header) and Brad Keller (blast from 30 yards) for its first win over Cal since 2005. Cal’s starting goalie, David Bingham, was injured and had to be replaced by freshman Robby Gogatz in the 28th minute. The Bears were shut out for the first time this season.

“Needless to say, it’s our biggest win of the season and the guys deserved it,” said Washington coach Dean Wurzberger. “They played well and it was a mature performance, like a professional performance.”

— Friday’s only other Top 25 upset also took place on the West Coast. Despite playing the last 39 minutes with 10 players after Tim Grey was shown a red card, San Diego knocked off No. 16 Portland, 2-1. Momentum switched after Collen Warner tied the score after Grey was ejected for a hand ball in the penalty area. The Pilots had several chances to go ahead before Marcelo Carminatti won the game for the visiting Toreros with a shot from 25 yards.

* BOUEMBOUE WATCH. Ronnie Bouemboue is making a case for Player of the Year honors with his play for N.C. State. The senior from Congo by way of Brooklyn scored his ACC-leading sixth goal of the season with just 49 seconds left to give the No. 25 Wolfpack a 1-0 win at No. 6 Duke Friday night.

* UNBEATEN HAWKS. Monmouth improved to 10-0-1 with a 1-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) on freshman Ryan Clark‘s goal in the 86th minute, his fourth game-winning goal. “As we move forward,” said Monmouth coach Rob McCourt, “we need to do a better job of finishing our scoring opportunities earlier in the game.”

Tar Heels break out of slump with three quick goals

WOMEN’S NEWS … Defending national champion North Carolina, which had not scored from the run of play in more than 200 minutes, broke out with three goals in the first nine-plus minutes and rolled on to a 5-0 win over visiting N.C. State Friday evening.

The No. 3 Tar Heels got goals from Courtney Jones, Meghan Klingenberg and Ali Hawkins, allowing Coach Anson Dorrance to empty his deep bench. How deep? He used 26 players. “These kids work hard for our starters,” he said of the UNC reserves, “and finally got the chance to play a bit.”

Last week UNC had beaten Boston College, 2-1, on a pair of controversial penalty kicks and fell at Virginia Tech, 1-0. UNC and Virginia Tech are now tied for first place in the ACC with 12 points, though the Hokies have a game in hand.

* LEVIN LIFTS CARDINAL. No. 1 Stanford is so deep that it can afford to use Camille Levin, a 2008 Soccer America All-Freshman team selection, off the bench. Levin came on in the second half Friday night and provided a spark for the visiting Cardinal, who scored three goals in the last 35 minutes to defeat Oregon State, 3-0, in their Pac-10 opener.

Levin scored her first goal of the season on a one-on-one opportunity. Christen Press (11th goal) and Lindsay Taylor (20-yard free kick) also scored for Stanford, which improved to 12-0-0, its best start in school history. “Every game in this conference is hard,” said Cardinal coach Paul Ratcliffe. “We’ve got to play our best and believe we’re going to score and break the ice.”

— Lauren Cheney moved into second place all-time on the UCLA scoring list (141 points) with the second goal in the No. 4 Bruins’ 2-0 victory over Arizona, their 10th win in a row.

— No. 14 USC, the surprise 2007 national champion, defeated Arizona State, 1-0, for its eighth straight win. Goalkeeper Kristin Olsen picked up her 25th shutout to tie the Trojans’ career record.

— No. 19 California won its first game since Coach Neil McGuire returned to the team, winning at No. 25 Oregon, 2-1.

* TOP 25 UPSETS. Friday night’s wildest game took place in Milwaukee, where Marquette came back from 2-0 down after less than 20 minutes to beat No. 13 Connecticut, 3-2, on sophomore Rachael Sloan‘s goal in the 108th minute. The only other Top 25 team to fall to an unranked team was No. 15 LSU, which lost its first SEC game of the season when it fell at Kentucky, 1-0.

* CROWD COUNT. Navy won its annual clash with Army, 2-0, before a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility record crowd of 2,627. “It was an incredible atmosphere out there tonight,” said Navy coach Carin Gabarra. “The entire brigade really showed its support tonight and it means the world to us.”
