The Amazin’ New York Red Bulls

Now that’s what I call an upset – safe to call it the biggest one in MLS playoff history, I think. Here comes Juan Carlos Osorio with the, let us say, undistinguished Red Bulls, a team rendered even weaker by drug suspensions and injuries, and they knock off the high-flying Houston Dynamo. I’m not going to say that they did it in style, that would hardly be accurate. But they did it in just about as convincing a way as possible — by winning down there, in Houston, in the packed, hostile, stadium of the Dynamo. Winning? This was a wipe out — you can’t argue with a resounding 3-0 scoreline.

East takes three of final four places

[MLS] For the first time, one conference will provide three members of the final four MLS playoff teams, and might yet supply both MLS Cup finalists. Form held in the East, with both of the higher seeds winning, yet in the West, neither of the top two survived. Eastern conference champion Columbus defeated No. 4 Kansas City, 2-0, Saturday to complete a 3-1 aggregate win and on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET ESPN2) hosts the No. 2 Fire, a 3-0 aggregate winner over No. 3 New England. The Red Bulls, fifth-place finishers in the East, travel to Utah for a Saturday (9:30 p.m. ET, Fox Soccer Channel) showdown with Real Salt Lake, which won the first playoff series in its history by tying Chivas USA, 2-2, to prevail on aggregate, 3-2. New York stunned Western Conference champion Houston, 3-0, Sunday for a 4-1 series victory.

Spanish Ref: Fine The Divers

“I am convinced that if we put fines of $64,000 and two or three-game bans for diving in the area then it would make people think.” Experienced Spanish referee Manuel Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez calls for tough measures on divers after the controversial late penalty awarded to Liverpool against Atletico Madrid in Champions League play Tuesday.

Chelsea extends U.S. reach

English club Chelsea has extended its reach into American youth soccer by partnering with New Jersey’s Match Fit Academy. As a result of the partnership, the Match Fit’s Academy teams will now be known as Match Fit Chelsea — just like North Carolina’s CASL program has adopted the name CASL Chelsea FC Academy for its academy teams (and the Chicago Magic is now Chicago Magic AS Monaco and the Michigan Wolves are Derby County Wolves)
