[MLS] Major League Soccer isn’t like American leagues such as the NFL and NBA, which have ready-made stars emerge from their drafts each year. The lack of young impact players is the most glaring weakness of American soccer, leaving MLS clubs to struggle to make use of the annual player draft. For evidence, one needs to look no further than the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. To date, eight of the 14 players taken in the first round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft have yet to play while three other players have played a combined 27 minutes.

Crew’s fluid attack swirls around Schelotto
The Columbus Crew attack overran a vaunted Chivas USA defense last Saturday and rang up four goals — a mark it failed to reach in 30 games last year — to win, 4-3. Guillermo Barros Schelotto earned Player of the Week honors with a penalty-kick goal and two assists. All eyes will be on him this Thursday when he takes on Marcelo Gallardo and D.C. United in the first MLS matchup of these Argentine veterans, former stars for Boca Juniors and River Plate, respectively.
Gullit Blames Poor Finishing for L.A. Loss
Los Angeles Galaxy fans endured a frustrating 3-2 loss to Toronto FC on Sunday. The L.A. Times Grahame L. Jones described it as a “strange” game because the Galaxy (read: Landon Donovan and David Beckham) looked brilliant at times, creating numerous chances in the first half, in particular. But when Donovan or Beckham couldn’t be […]
Phenom Balotelli Leading Inter’s Title Charge
For the second week in a row, Serie A title pretender Roma played before league-leading Inter Milan and won, closing the gap at the top of the standings to a single point. But for the second week in a row, Inter responded with a comfortable 2-0 win against potentially troublesome opposition. The Italian press was […]
Soehn’s Reserves Fall Badly in Salt Lake
D.C. coach Tom Soehn’s decision to bench several of his regulars backfired badly on Saturday as Real Salt Lake blanked United, 4-0, at Rice-Eccles Stadium. In the wake of United’s 2-1 midweek win against Mexican power Pachuca, Soehn decided to rest Marcelo Gallardo, Zach Wells, Gonzalo Martinez and Santino Quaranta. It was United’s fifth game […]
Revs’ Lineups Lack Consistency
The New England Revolution has played just four games of the 2008 Major League Soccer season, and yet only four players have played every minute of every game. The Boston Globe’s Frank Dell’Apa says this lack of continuity is to blame for the Revs’ lack of consistency on the field. Two great performances — 3-0 […]
The ‘Surprisingly Palatable’ Earthquakes
Nine weeks is an incredibly short period of time to build a sports team from scratch, but nevertheless, San Jose Mercury News columnist Anne Killion says that San Jose’s “instant Earthquakes” have put together a “surprisingly palatable” on-field product. Indeed, the Quakes played well enough to beat Chicago in their home opener on Saturday, but […]

Midweek action includes the Copa Libertadores and domestic cup play in Portugal, Italy and Spain. In MLS’s Thursday night game, D.C. United hosts Columbus.
Galaxy is playing its role perfectly (badly)
Well, after a week of routs and upsets, flameouts and comebacks, who’s to pick on in MLS? The weak have become stronger, the traditionally strong are stumbling yet far from beaten, and those in the middle are where they are on merit.
Wild MLS weekend
[NAMES & NUMBERS] The third weekend of play in Major League Soccer produced several wild affairs. The smallest MLS crowd in Columbus home history saw the Crew prevail, 4-3, over Chivas USA in a match that featured four goals in 11 minutes — and a pair of red cards in the next two minutes. Frenchman Laurent Robert won the battle of former EPL long-ball specialists handily over David Beckham as Toronto FC stunned Los Angeles, 3-2, on Sunday. Real Salt Lake exploded for its biggest victory in its history when it crushed D.C. United, 4-0. For all the MLS developments …
Arsenal falls by the wayside
[EUROPEAN RACES] Manchester United knocked Arsenal out of the English Premier League race with a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Real Madrid (Spain) and Inter Milan (Italy) also moved closer to repeating as league champions, while Bayern Munich (Germany) opened up a double-digit lead in its bid to win the Bundesliga title. Lyon, winner of the last six French league titles, saw its lead over second-place Bordeaux fall to four points.

The Vancouver Whitecaps opened the 2008 season with a 1-0 home victory over Canadians rival Montreal before a sellout crowd of 5,288.
USA edges Canada in shootout
[OLYMPIC WOMEN’S QUALIFYING] For the first time in 11 games since Pia Sundhage took over as head coach, the U.S. women’s national team didn’t earn an outright victory, but it managed to beat Canada in a shootout Saturday to win the 2008 Concacaf Olympic women’s qualifying tournament in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The battle of Olympic finalists ended in a 1-1 tie (0-0 after 90 minutes), and the Americans prevailed, 6-5, on penalty kicks. The result ended the Americans’ perfect record of 27 wins in Concacaf competitions dating back to 1991.
The winning formula? There isn’t one
Extraordinary! How do these things happen in soccer? I’m looking at the stat sheet for the New England vs. Colorado game. Which shows that the Revs had nine shots on goal, all of which Colorado keeper Bouna Coundoul saved, while the Rapids managed only one shot on target — which Matt Reis failed to save. So Colorado wins 1-0.
MLS Clubs Far From Embarrassing in CCC
Goal.com’s Pat Walsh tries to look on the bright side of D.C. United and the Houston Dynamo’s failure to advance to the Champions Cup semifinals. He says that American teams are no longer the embarrassment they used to be in international competitions. “Gone are the days where American sides are dispatched in the way that […]

Reports all over the place are claiming that Ronaldinho’s transfer to AC Milan is an all but done deal. Cuban Trio in Galaxy Tryout
Three of the six Cuban players who defected to the U.S. last month have been given a tryout with the Los Angeles Galaxy, the L.A. Times Grahame L. Jones reports. Jose Manuel Miranda, Yenier Bermudez and Yordany Alvarez were members of the Cuba U-23 team that saw six players and one assistant coach defect while […]
Hahnemann Not Relishing Fulham Contest
Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann is heavyhearted about this weekend’s match-up against Fulham FC. The Cottagers, Hahnemann’s former team and the current employer of five of his American compatriots, are teetering on the brink of relegation; defeat would almost certainly send them down. Reading is also hovering near the relegation zone, and will be looking to […]
MLS in International Competitions: Garber Could Help, Too
SoccerTimes’ Robert Wagman hits out at comments made by MLS Commissioner Don Garber in a recent Soccer America report. After watching D.C. lose 2-0 to Pachuca in Mexico, Garber said, “Boy, we’ve got to do better. For this league to win over the core audience, we’ve got to be able to be among the best […]
The ‘everybody does it’ defense
Revs coach Steve Nicol let loose a bitter tirade against referee Baldomero Toledo after he punished a clumsy tackle by Jeff Larentowicz with a straight red card in the seventh minute of New England’s 4-0 loss at Chicago last week [VIDEO].
Nicol ranted after the game, claiming such tackles don’t warrant reds anywhere else in the world.
