UEFA Champions League TV Schedule
Five berths in the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League will be on the line on Tuesday. Marseille, only 13th in France’s Ligue 1, can clinch a berth in the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League with a win against Liverpool at the Stade Velodrome. OM, which has won all six home games it’s played against English clubs, will also advance with a tie unless Besiktas wins at Porto. Liverpool will probably be knocked out unless it wins. In Group C, all four teams remain in contention, though the top two teams, Real Madrid and Olympiakos, are both at home. For all Tuesday’s TV listings …
Osorio leaves Chicago for Red Bulls
A gain for Red Bull New York is a loss for Chicago, and a reprieve for Chivas USA. Juan Carlos Osorio, passed over twice in previous coaching searches by the dysfunctional MLS franchise previously known as the MetroStars, is bolting from the Fire five months after leaving his native Colombia to coach in MLS. Osorio’s move to Red Bull, where he replaces Bruce Arena, leaves Preki — who had pursued the Red Bull job — still in charge of Chivas USA, and Chicago in a major lurch.
Bruce Arena linked to Scotland job?
Would Scotland hire an American coach to revive a national team that hasn’t qualified for a major tournament in a decade? The question has come up because numerous media outlets reported that Bruce Arena expressed his interest in the position. Arena, contacted by e-mail, described the media reports as “pretty inaccurate,” but did not elaborate. A foreign nation hiring an American as national team coach would not be unprecedented.

Expanding MLS Faces Talent Squeeze
Ives Galarcep of ESPN Soccernet worries that Major League Soccer is growing at a rate that’s too fast for the talent pool in the U.S. to keep up. With San Jose next year, Seattle, and then another city after that, “MLS is need of a talent infusion,” he says. Meanwhile, the trend among American talent […]
Inter Extends Serie A Lead
Inter Milan soared past Torino, 4-0, at the San Siro on Sunday to take a five-point lead at the top of Serie A over second-place AS Roma, which labored to a 1-1 draw at Livorno. Once again, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the catalyst for Inter, converting a penalty on 38 minutes to swing the match […]
Re-Injured Ronaldo a Doubt for Club World Cup
Under bizarre and some might even say mysterious circumstances, AC Milan striker Ronaldo has missed almost the entire season through injury. Not a major injury like a leg break or an ACL tear, mind you, but a recurring thigh problem that remained shrouded in mystery. Then, two weeks ago, the Brazilian finally made his season […]
Capello Overtakes Mourinho as England Frontrunner
The English press might still be pining for Jose Mourinho, but the London Times says that former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has become the frontrunner to take over as England coach. According to the report, Mourinho has had a late change of heart, and is now setting his sights on coaching one of Europe’s […]
Another Milestone for United’s Quiet Man
Typical of the man, Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs quietly achieved yet another significant milestone in his glorious 16-year career at Old Trafford this weekend. The Welshman’s goal in United’s 4-1 win over Derby County on Saturday was his 100th English Premier League goal for United, a feat that puts him in some seriously prestigious […]
Gansler departure leaves void in Toronto
Remember the item of a few months back referring to a “disgruntled Eastern Conference assistant coach?” He wasn’t, as some suspected, working for Red Bull New York, at which confusion or miscommunication between former head coach Bruce Arena and his assistants filtered down to the players and helped trigger Arena’s departure shortly after RBNY was eliminated in the playoffs.
A USC title? No problem
Paul Kennedy on the new women’s champion
On the eve of the Women’s College Cup, first-year USC coach Ali Khosroshahin recounted his first meeting with his new boss, Athletic Director Mike Garrett, after being named the Trojans’ women’s soccer coach last winter. “We evaluate you on national championships,” Garrett, SC’s first Heisman Trophy winner, told Khosroshahin, who arrived from Cal State Fullerton. “No pressure!” Khosroshahin joked. More like, no problem.
REACTION: Women’s College Cup
USC’s Ali Khosroshanin exuded confidence going into the Women’s College Cup, and he said it was for real. “With this group,” he said afterwards, “it took them a while to start believing, but once they started it’s been a spectacular run.” The assessment of star Amy Rodriguez? Once USC got rolling, it was “like every game we just took teams apart.” For more from the USC and FSU players and coaches after Sunday’s Women’s College Cup final …

Virginia Tech shocks UConn in mud
[ELITE 8] Virginia Tech pulled the biggest upset of the NCAA Division I Men’s Tournament quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over No. 3 seed Connecticut Saturday afternoon before 5,495 fans in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies took a 17-game home winning streak into the game, but bad field conditions and bad luck conspired to knock them out. Instead, Virginia Tech is heading to the Men’s College Cup this weekend in Cary. N.C.
Wake returns to Men’s College Cup
[ELITE 8] Wake Forest will be the only team at this year’s Men’s College Cup that played in last year’s finals in St. Louis. Indeed, the No. 2 seed Demon Deacons are the only team still alive to have ever played in a men’s final four. They moved into Friday’s semifinal against ACC rival Virginia Tech with a 1-0 overtime win over Notre Dame Saturday night before a record crowd of 4,589 at Spry Stadium.
Against all expectations, UMass makes final four
[ELITE 8] Sam Koch will be the first to admit that he didn’t plan on Massachusetts going to the Men’s College Cup. The Minutemen coach went so far as to book a family trip to Disney World for Thanksgiving. Well, the trip came and went without him, and three weeks later, UMass is still playing. The Minutemen made sure of that with a 2-1 victory over UIC on Sunday at the place the Minutemen call Fort Rudd.
Buckeye blitz ends Bradley run
[ELITE 8] Bradley had overcame one- and two-goal deficits to win at Indiana and Maryland in the second and third rounds, but there was no Braves’ comeback Sunday at Ohio State. Even the support of eight busloads of Bradley supporters who had made the trek from Peoria couldn’t help the Braves after they fell behind on a Xavier Balc penalty kick in the 58th minute. A four-goal blitz over 12 minutes sent the Buckeyes to the Men’s College Cup for the first time with a 4-0 win.
