While he enters the 2009 season as the Red Bulls incumbent keeper, having been between the posts for the last six games of a season that ended with an unlikely appearance in the MLS Cup final, 23-year-old Danny Cepero “doesn’t expect the starting job to be handed to him on a silver platter,” writes Michael Lewis.

Cepero is expected to start 2009 in goal for the Red Bulls due in part to there being four games remaining on veteran Jon Conway‘s suspension for violating the MLS substance abuse and behavioral health policy, but Cepero knows that “whoever’s best is going to play, so it’s important for me to focus.”

Although he gained a dose of YouTube notoriety for becoming the first goalie in MLS history to score a goal, Cepero is instead focused on video from the Red Bulls championship loss in which he admits a mistake on Columbus’ first goal. "I try to be my harshest critic," he says. "I think that’s the best way to learn.”
