Winners
PSV EINDHOVEN, in what was the first face-off of Americans in UEFA Champions League history, beat Norway's Rosenborg, 2-1, and moved to the top of the Group E standings with a 2-1 win. Robbie Russell started and played the full 90 for Rosenborg, and accepted some of the responsibility for PSV's opening goal by Jefferson Farfan, while DaMARCUS BEASLEY entered the game in the 83rd minute for PSV. Beasley replaced Farfan, who needed treatment after a foul by Russell four minutes earlier.
CHARLES-EDOUARD CORIDON scored a spectacular goal — an overhead, back-heel volley from 12 yards — to set Paris Saint-Germain on the path to a 2-0 win over defending Champions League champion Porto.
MICHAEL OWEN scored his first goal for Real Madrid since joining the Spanish club from Liverpool in the offseason. Making his first start in six games since Coach Mariano Garcia Remon took over, Owen poked in a Ronaldo cross to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.
Losers
CLAUDIO RANIERI, on the day of his 53rd birthday, saw his Valencia team routed, 5-1, by Inter Milan thanks to an inspired performance by Brazilian striker Adriano. Ranieri, who returned for his second stint at Valencia this season, inherited a team that won last year's Spanish La Liga and UEFA Cup, but has now suffered two straight Champions League defeats.
JENS LEHMANN took a break from his feud with Oliver Kahn over the German national team starting goalkeeper job to make two blunders in Arsenal's 2-2 tie with Panathinaikos. Lehman was lobbed from 40 yards by Gonzalez after heading a ball outside the penalty left him out of position and was in no man's land when Emmanuel Olisadebe headed in a corner kick. Lehmann's mishaps were blamed for Arsenal's Champions League exit last season.
GLASGOW CELTIC suffered its eighth straight away Champions League loss when it fell, 3-0, to Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. The Scottish champion has zero points from three games this season.
