French World Cup defender William Gallas is in the doghouse at Chelsea after failing to turn in up in Los Angeles as part of the club’s pre-season preparations in the U.S. Both Gallas and new signing Michael Ballack had been given added time off after the World Cup, but a request to have his holiday extended further was denied by coach Jose Mourinho. Gallas has made no secret of his desire to leave Stamford Bridge even though he still has a year to go on his contract. His dissent resulted in losing his no. 13 shirt to Ballack, plus a $150,000 fine. While Gallas has made it clear that he wants to leave, the club has told him he’ll have to wait until his contract runs out. In a statement, Chelsea announced that the player had been given a number but would not confirm what it is. Gallas, who recently rejected a new 5-year deal, won’t return to training with Chelsea until the team returns from its tour of the U.S. on Monday. His agent said there had been “a misunderstanding” and the player would be back from holiday at the end of the week.
