As was widely expected, Colin Clarke’s days as coach of FC Dallas are over. Said Michael Hitchcock, the club’s general manager: “At the end of the day, this team, which I felt was, if not the most talented team, one of the most talented teams in the league, underachieved.” The Hoops, as the club is affectionately known by its fans, finished the regular season as the top team in the Western Conference, but they were dumped out of MLS Cup early by a determined second-leg rally by the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference semi-final. That’s the second consecutive loss for Dallas in the second round of the playoffs on penalty kicks. “We are extremely talented, but there were times when we didn’t attack as much as we should have or as much as I would have liked,” Hitchcock said. “So, style of play and defining a style of play that the team buys into is extremely important.” Hitchcock said, adding that he hopes to replace Clarke by the end of the year. In the interim, assistant coach Steve Morrow will take over the club and help Hitchcock make vital decisions ahead of the Nov. 17 expansion draft for MLS’ new club, Toronto FC. The draft rules state that Toronto can add 10 total players, no more than one from each team; Dallas will be allowed to protect 11 of its 28 players from being picked by the new club.
