A classy display from Barcelona that included inspirational performances from Ronaldinho and Eidur Gudjohnsen helped the Catalans top Werder Bremen and move easily into the second round of the UEFA Champions League. It was a decidedly poor performance from the German leader in a game where a draw or a win would have seen it through to the next phase. However, the game never looked beyond doubt after Ronaldinho’s clever free-kick in the 13th minute: the Brazilian wizard struck the ball firmly on the ground and into the corner of the goal as the Werder wall jumped, anticipating a high curling free kick. Five minutes later, Ronaldinho, again at the heart of things, flighted a ball over the flat Werder back-line to Frenchman Ludovic Giuly, who squared the ball to the unmarked (and possibly offsides) Eidur Gudjohnsen to slot home from 12 yards. It could have easily been three or four, as Gudjohnsen hit the post after beating three men in the area, and the off-balance Giuly missed an open net. After tat Bremen never really came close, and Barcelona was largely able to see out the second half on autopilot. The tournament’s defending champion labored to get into the second round this year, ultimately finishing second behind Chelsea. Long-term injuries to key players Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi have blighted Barcelona’s campaign this season, yet the club remains first in the Spanish league and alive in Europe. Both Messi and Eto’o should be back when the Champions League resumes in late February. The second round draw is Dec. 16.
