English Champions Chelsea are crying foul over the advance of Real Madrid on Dutch star Arjen Robben. Real’s newly elected president, Juan Roman Calderon, boldly proclaimed the Spanish side would land the coveted winger, whose sparkling performances down the left were just about the only memorable thing the Dutch were able to offer at this World Cup. Calderon claimed that Madrid’s new technical director (and former player) Pedrag Mijatovic had made contact with the player, who was anxious for a move. “We’re trying to bring three [new players] here and Robben is the first one,” Calderón told Sky Sports News yesterday. He said Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich told Mijatovic that an agreement could be reached, as “it seems that [Robben] wants to come here.” It seems to be a tactic of both Barcelona and Real Madrid to use players’ names as an election tactic. It remains to be seen how much weight is behind Calderon’s claims. Chelsea said there had been no discussions between the clubs and stated flatly: “We will not be entertaining any offers for Arjen.” In fact, Chelsea countered by requesting that FIFA investigate an illegal approach to their player. Meanwhile, AC Milan had already registered a separate complaint about Real Madrid making an illegal offer to Brazilian international Kaka. Right now this looks unlikely, but if Milan is relegated as a result of the Italian scandal, Kaka and others will be looking to move elsewhere. Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was also on top of Real Madrid’s shopping list. Arsenal responded by saying it would not sell him for “all the gold in the world”.
