Appalachian State head coach Dan Golan is the new head coach at Evansville, replacing Fred Schmalz, who retired after the 2002 season following 24 years at the Purple Aces' helm.

Before taking over at Appalachian State, where he posted a 22-12-1 record in two seasons, Golan served as Mark Berson's assistant coach at the University of South Carolina in 1995-2000. Golan played four seasons at USC (1984-88)

The Purple Aces have posted five losing seasons in the past six years.

Schmalz guided Evansville to 11 NCAA tournament appearances in 24 years, including final four appearances in 1985 and 1990 while compiling a 302-165-49 record. Schmalz, who also coached Wyoming and Davis & Elkins College, ended his 33-year head-coaching career with a 403-196-56 record.
