Bobby Clark will leave Stanford to take on the head coaching position at Notre Dame. The former Scotland international goalkeeper, who has become one of the college gameÆs most respected coaches first at Dartmouth (1985-94) and then Stanford, listed the high cost of living in the Bay Area as a major factor in his decision to move to South Bend, Ind. ôMy reasons for leaving are clearly not about Stanford Athletics,ö Clark said. ôI have loved my five years on the Farm. It is for personal reasons. I will miss my team, my fellow workers….but I will not miss the Bay Area cost of living. ôIt will be nice to own a real house again, have a garden, and be able to have family come visit without having everyone sleeping in the living room.ö Clark took the Cardinal to the NCAA final three seasons ago, losing, 3-1, to Indiana. They narrowly missed a return trip to the final four this season, losing to SMU, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Clark compiled a 71-21-12 record in five seasons at the Farm. One of the keys to ClarkÆs success at Stanford has been his connections with the New Zealand national team program, which he guided for two years, 1994-96. Among the players he brought over were current Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Simon Elliott and Ryan Nelsen, this yearÆs Pac 10 Player of the Year and the NSCAA/adidas menÆs soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year.
