Defending champion UCLA is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Men's Division I Tournament, which begins Friday.

The action in the 48-team field begins with 16 games this week and another 16 games Wednesday, Nov. 26. The top 16 teams received byes for the first round.

Every ACC team except Duke received bids. The ACC and Big East each had six teams advance to the tournament, while the Pac-10 and WCC on the West Coast each had four teams get bids.

Six teams made the tournament with eight or more losses.

Five teams are making their first appearance in the Division I Tournament: Binghamton, St. Peter's, Western Michigan, Michigan and Virginia Tech.

The surprise omission is Hartwick, which went 15-2-1 but won only three games against teams with winning records and lost to Atlantic Soccer champion FIU, the only team it faced that made the NCAA field. Another team with a case for making the tournament was William & Mary (9-6-4) with wins over NCAA-bound N.C. State and Virginia and ties with St. John's and Old Dominion.
