A month after it dropped four varsity sports, Fresno State University reinstated two of four sports, men's soccer and women's swimming.

The move came after the Valley Soccer Foundation, formed to save the men's soccer program, raised $530,000 for men's soccer and women's swimming.

The amount was $150,000 short of the $680,000 required by May 15 for reinstatement, but the Fresno State administration agreed to cover the additional money. It would have had to pay $150,000 in scholarships for players on the two teams dropped who remained in school.

The reprieve is only for one year, though. The Valley Soccer Foundation must raise $2.7 million — $680,000 to cover the two programs the next four years — by Jan. 15, 2004, to extend the programs for four more years.
