Greg Ryan, who guided SMU to a WAC championship and an NCAA berth in 1997, has been named head women’s soccer coach at Colorado College. Ryan succeeds Nicole Crepeau, who resigned last fall after five seasons with the Tigers. Ryan returns to Colorado Springs after serving as an assistant coach for the CC men’s program in 1983 and 1984. The CC women’s program was among the nation’s elite in the late 1980s, but has slipped in this decade. “My family and I are very excited about coming back,” said Ryan. “The soccer program clearly is in a rebuilding phase, but it’s going to be a positive process. I want to take the good things that currently are present with the team and build from that foundation.” A 1985 graduate of SMU, Ryan has coached the women’s team at his alma mater since 1996. He previously spent eight years (1986-1993) as the women’s coach at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to five NCAA tournaments and an appearance in the national championship match in 1991. “I’ve competed against Greg since he was at Wisconsin,” said North Carolina coach Anson Dorrance. “Every place he’s gone, his teams have competed at the highest level. I remember him bringing Wisconsin to the Final Four and reconstructing the program at SMU, how competitive they became in such a short time. I’m convinced that he can bring Colorado College back to its days of glory, near the top of Division I.”
