John Kerr, Jr., the Herrman Trophy winner who led Duke to the 1986 NCAA championship and is currently player-coach of the A-League’s Boston Bulldogs, has been named the head men’s coach at Harvard. Kerr, who made 16 appearances for the U.S. national team, replaces Steve Locker as the Crimson coach. Kerr’s wife, Tracy, is a former assistant for the Harvard women’s team who was recently named head women’s coach at Providence College. The 34-year-old Kerr has played professionally in England, Ireland France, Canada and the USA. He spent two seasons in MLS prior to becoming coach of the A-League’s Worcester Wildfire, which changed its name to the Boston Bulldogs this year. He served as an assistant coach at Duke in 1992. “I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to coach at a place like Harvard University and in a league as competitive as the Ivy League,” said Kerr. “I am looking forward to leading the program back to the success it has enjoyed in the past.” Kerr will remain with the Bulldogs through Aug. 25 and begin his duties at Harvard on Aug. 27. Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol will assume head-coaching duties for the Bulldogs.
