Senior forward Tawni Epperson scored on a breakaway in the second minute of the fourth overtime period to give Macalester a 1-0 win over College of New Jersey and the school’s first NCAA title in any sport. It was the longest championship match since Ithaca beat Cortland on penalties in 1990. Both teams saw free kicks hit the crossbar, and Macalester forward Holly Harris was denied twice on breakaways in the first overtime. The winning goal was the first that College of New Jersey freshman keeper Victoria Nusse had allowed all season. College of New Jersey advanced to the final by downing host Ithaca 2-0 behind strikes from Traci Tapp and Denise Buckley, while Macalester edged Willamette 1-0 on a 25-yard blast from Carly Androff.
