No. 1 SMU ground out a difficult victory and No. 2 Saint Louis turned a tight game into a romp on Saturday to advance to the NCAA Division I men’s soccer quarterfinals. SMU (21-0) claimed a 1-0 triumph over visiting UCLA on Mohamed Fahim’s late goal. Saint Louis (18-1) scored three second-half goals — two of them two minutes apart — to eliminate visiting Loyola (Md.), 3-0. Sixth-ranked St. John’s (16-2-3) also won its third-round game on Saturday, edging Penn State, 2-1, in three overtimes at Adelphi University. A look at Saturday’s third-round action: ò UCLA goalkeeper Zach Wells stopped a penalty kick, but he couldn’t halt Fahim’s first-touch finish of Diego Walsh’s feed in the 76th minute that gave top-seeded SMU a quarterfinal assignment against St. John’s. Wells stopped Walsh’s PK after Fahim was fouled in the 71st minute. The 20th-ranked Bruins (12-7-4) lost midfielder Ryan Futagaki a minute later, red-carded for a foul on Ugo Ihemelu. Fahim struck four minutes after that. ò Shalrie Joseph pushed home Jeff Matteo’s free kick in the 129th minute to carry eighth-seeded St. John’s past No. 11 Penn State. Joseph also fed Angel Rodriguez for the Red Storm’s 47th-minute equalizer. Penn State (14-5-1) went ahead in the 41st minute when Ricardo Villar headed in Derek Potteiger’s chip following Potteiger’s end-line run. The Nittany Lions played the final 55 minutes — 16 minutes of regulation and 39 minutes of overtime — with just 10 men after Chris Stout’s ejection for rough play. ò Dipsy Selolwane and Jason Cole scored goals two minutes apart and sixth-seeded Saint Louis quickly put away No. 14 Loyola (17-2-2) after battling scoreless more than 50 minutes. Selolwane corralled a long ball from Marty Tappel, shielded a defender, then fired under Greyhounds goalkeeper Reb Beatty to give the Billikens a 54th-minute lead. The goal was Selolwane’s D1-leading 25th of the season. Jason Cole headed home a Brad Davis corner kick in the 56th, and Jack Jewsbury capitalized on a misplayed back pass to make it 3-0 in the 76th. Saint Louis will take on third-seeded Stanford (18-1-1), which eliminated Portland on Friday night, in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals conclude with four matches on Sunday.
