Freshman Ryan Soroka did it again, scoring his fifth game-winning goal in the last six games as St. John's beat Monmouth, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament on Friday night.

The Red Storm defense extended its shutout streak to a school-record seven games.

St. John's advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 5 seed Maryland in College Park on Wednesday night. The Red Storm and defending national champion Terrapins will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season and fifth time in the last eight years.

''We got a great goal by Ryan and some really good play from Jason, Billy [Hole], Joel [Gustafsson] and Rory [Quinn] in the back,'' St. John's coach Dave Masur said. ''It was a great effort to win the game, but we have to set a higher bar for ourselves and really push to get better.''
