Tom Fitzgerald is leaving UCLA after two years of serving as head coach and announced he will coach at the University of Tampa, where he was head coach in 1987-95.
Fitzgerald, who coached MLS's Columbus Crew for six seasons (1996-2001), guided UCLA to the 2002 NCAA Division I title. Last season, UCLA won its second Pac-10 title under Fitzgerald while becoming the first team to record a perfect 10-0-0 record in that conference.
Fitzgerald, whose family lives in Tampa, guided the University of Tampa to the 1994 NCAA Division II title.
''While my wife, Debi, and I will cherish our experience at UCLA forever and will take only great memories with us to our next challenge, we miss our family and we have an intense desire and obligation to spend more time with them,'' Fitzgerald said.
Dawson Driscoll resigned as University of Tampa coach with four games left in the 2003 season.
